MJS: Abp Listecki questions recall drive against Walker, respects his leadership

In case you missed it, here is the eight-minute segment in which Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki sits down with WITI-TV (Channel 6) over the weekend to chat about Gov. Scott Walker, the possible recall election and church and politics.

The bottom line: Listecki gives his blessing to Walker but not the recall.

“You have a recall when you have corruption, you have clearly something that's done that's illegal," Listecki said. "If there was something which was morally detrimental to society, I think you do that.

"Otherwise," he continued, "you have an election, you live with an election for four years, and you vote the person out of office.”

Dubbed "Milwaukee's political priest" by the TV station, Listecki said he doesn't consider himself a Republican or Democrat, though he said he sees himself as "part of the political process." He even strikes a brief Tim Tebow pose while discussing his faith and role in society.

Asked about the first-term Republican governor, Listecki said he respects Walker - whose father was a Baptist preacher - for what he has done since taking office a little more than a year ago.

“Scott Walker did what he thought was right," Listecki said.

"Therefore, he was, as a leader, he was willing to stand up and to - quote - take the heat for doing that," he said. "Only time will tell whether or not basically the course of action (was right). In his mind, he saw that as the right action. As a leader, I respect him for doing it.”
