Platteville parishioners pull support from school because priests stress orthodox Catholic teaching

The church's operating loan has reached its maximum limit of $190,000, according to Ruiz. The church has an additional $90,000 in debts.

"Something has to change," said Myron Tranel, a member of the church finance council. "We can't keep digging the hole deeper."

Some parishioners have pegged the steep drop in church donations to June 2010. That's when Madison Catholic Bishop Robert Morlino installed three priests at St. Mary's from a Catholic society founded in Spain that stresses traditionalist liturgy and devotion to orthodox Catholic teaching.

About 40 percent of the church's 1,200 members signed a petition later that year seeking their ouster. Morlino stood by the priests.

"The fact that some parishioners don't like their style is a concern," diocesan spokesman Brent King said this week. "But Bishop Morlino gives them his full support."

Morlino is planning to celebrate Mass at St. Mary's Saturday. The trip was scheduled prior to the latest financial news, King said.

You might remember Bishop Morlino's response to the group of parishioners trying to get rid of the priests.  That post was the highest read on this site to date.
