Correction: Bp. Callahan expresses appreciation for HHS lawsuits

via WQOW18:
La Crosse (Press Release) - Bishop William P. Callahan of the Diocese of La Crosse expressed his appreciation on the May 21, 2012 announcement from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops that 43 dioceses, hospitals, schools and Church agencies joined forces to file 12 lawsuits stating that the "U.S. Department of Health and Human Services mandate violates religious freedom."

During the recording of his Pentecost video message for the Diocese of La Crosse, Bishop Callahan said "there has been no greater understanding of how the Holy Spirit is moving within the Church than the bold and fresh approach that we are seeing now by the bishops leading the Church in terms of understanding how we are to respond to the current HHS mandate; calling forth and supporting the right of religious liberty in our country."

Responding to comments that the Church should not be involved in a political issue, Bishop Callahan said "this is not a political issue; it is a legal issue – a Constitutional issue. This is a matter of us standing firm in understanding that the very basic understanding of our Constitution and our country is so that we may practice our faith, practice our belief with freedom and without reservation, intimidation and government interference."

"Due to the many lawsuits across the country, we are beginning to see a visceral understanding of the fact that people know that religious liberty is important with regard to our lives as Americans and certainly important to our lives of faith," said Callahan.
Good for Bp. Callahan!!

UPDATE 5/23 5pm:
The headline “Diocese of La Crosse joins lawsuit against HHS mandate” is not correct. WXOW first published it wrong, which was picked up by WQOW and your blog. (http://badgercatholic.blogspot.com/2012/05/diocese-of-la-crosse-joins-lawsuit.html)

Bishop Callahan did not state that the diocese joined the lawsuit, he simply expressed his appreciation for the dioceses and entities that filed 12 law suits on May 21.
