Madison Vicar General releases statement on "crack down"

Allegory of the Cave

“Morlino Cracks Down on Two Nuns” is a misleading headline to an article appearing in the Wisconsin State Journal newspaper of Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2012. The headline provocatively attempts to sensationalize the ordinary operations of the Catholic Church. The real issue is about the permissibility of members of Wisdom’s Well to speak at parishes, not about religious sisters. Contrary to the impression of the article’s headline, the prohibited group at this specific time is Wisdom’s Well, which includes not only religious sisters, but also others, and the “group” not being corrected at this time is religious sisters in general in the Diocese of Madison, including the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa. The Diocese of Madison is aware of and grateful for the charitable work of many religious sisters over the years.

The article also fails to address sufficiently the risk that materials and methods of the members of Wisdom’s Well may appear to promote opinions that are contrary to the Church faith. The Diocese of Madison pursued this matter with utmost confidentiality to protect the reputations of all parties. The specific limitation of this issue to members of Wisdom’s Well and the confidential documents sent to the priests were also communicated personally, confidentially, and directly by me to the Prioress of the Sinsinawa Dominican Congregation at the time of the confidential communication to the priests in the Diocese of Madison.

However, with the apparent leak of both the confidential statement sent to priests and the accompanying “synopsis of concerns” regarding the members of Wisdom’s Well, it is now necessary to protect the good reputation of the Church. Interested readers can go to www.madisondiocese.org to see both of these documents and will now be able to consider directly the fundamental issue of the materials and methods of the members of Wisdom’s Well that may appear to promote opinions contrary to the Catholic faith, as evidenced by excerpts from the Web site www.wisdomswell.org

Here's some examples from the doc

"My spiritual practice includes an Earthling’s contemplative way of BE-ing in the NOW,
continuing lively work in quantum awareness and honoring the Oneness of the diversity of all life."

"WHO IS SOPHIA? - In the West, divine wisdom is known as Sophia. In the East she is Mother Tao and Prajnaparamita. Sometimes she is recognized as incarnate in Mary and Kuan Yin. Indigenous peoples and others of Earth based spiritualities know her by many names, from Spider Woman to Danu to Tonantzin. She is celebrated as the Soul of the World. She is the wisdom of Earth as Gaia. The wisdom of evolution calling to us from the future is seen as a manifestation of Sophia."

I still can't figure out this nonsense about the Blessed Mother of God being "Mother Tao" and some sort of "Spider Woman." I guess I've just not yet achieved henosis....

It seems it's high time to reinstate the Minor Order of the Exorcist.

I cannot for the life of me figure out why they want to be considered Catholic if they believe the rest of this.

Thank you by the way Michael for the quotes.

FYI to Michael: The Priestly Fraternity of St. Peter, a Clerical Society of Apostolic Life of Pontifical right thus in good standing with Rome, does confer the minor orders, including exorcist.
As for the document, it does a good job of summarizing a complex subject & then documenting where Wisdom's Well & these Nuns are promoting it.

Yes, I know the FSSP and ICRSS (licitly) and FSSPX (illicitly), among others, still confer the Minor Orders. What I meant is simply that we clearly need more Exorcists on the ground, everywhere in the world, actively exorcising demonic spirits.

I cannot help but imagine that seeing the Blessed Mother of God as a "Spider Woman" must be some sort of diabolical vision. It just sounds like something that St Faustina would have seen when the Angel led her through Hell (and obviously it cannot truly be Mary, since she is not a spider-woman, but was assumed, body and soul, into heaven).

Either that or it's a horrid (and blasphemous) attempt at making a "gender-neutral" alternative to Marvel Comics....

All things considered, the prohibition from Catholic places is really a fairly weak move.

Justice really demands the sisters involved to be tried for heresy.

Oh, there is, indeed, a Spider Woman, but I don't think she was ever named Sophia. I prefer Jessica Drew in the role. (http://marvel.com/universe/Spider-Woman_(Jessica_Drew))

I agree, but:
1. This was a private communication that was leaked. We do not know what His Excellency might be doing behind the scenes with regard to correction. It could well be that he has privately demanded that they recant all heretical positions, or face further canonical penalties. Interdicts and excommunications are meant to be medicinal, not wrathful.

2. At least one of the women involved seems to not be a Catholic. Beth O'Brien is an oblate of Holy Wisdom Monastery, which is a non-Catholic community and the Holy Mass is not allowed to be said on their site. They instead have an "Ecumenical Eucharistic Celebration" led by female Protestant ministers. The Catholic Ordinary has no actual authority to govern the beliefs of non-Catholics. I wish he did, but he simply does not.
