Pope Benedict and the Green Bay Cathedral

This is a re-post but I think we might have some new readers that haven't heard this one before.

Francis Xavier Cathedral, Green Bay, WI, date: Back in the Day
There are a bunch of interesting things in that Cathedral, beginning with the tombs of the Bishops there.

Perhaps the most interesting item is in the anteroom found on the Epistle side (currently the main entrance.)

There is a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary there, which was a gift from the Archbishop of the Diocese which sent Green Bay's first Bishop (and many of its priests.)

The statue--which is absolutely stunning, although not large--was sent as a gift because the Archbishop of that Diocese in Germany could not attend the 100th Anniversary celebration of the Green Bay Diocese.

He explained that he'd "been suddenly called to another assignment in Rome" and simply could not re-schedule things conveniently.

His name?

Cardinal Jospeh Ratzinger

The cathedral is beautiful, but I am sure it does not look anything like that today.

Some photos from a recent Confirmation in the Traditional Form in the Cathedral. You will find most of it has been retained.

Yeah, I think Green Bay's cathedral is probably the top in the state. Though given the debacle in Milwaukee and the arson in Madison, I suppose that's not saying a whole lot.

Agreed. Green Bay's cathedral is definitely tops in Wisconsin, and stands up quite well to other diocesan cathedrals I've seen.

Superior Cathedral-was there Fourth of July 2012. Trying to remember the details but it seems it was very beautiful. Thank you for the beautiful story about Green Bay Cathedral and photo!
