Cardinals Llovera & Burke: liturgical abuse weakens the faith

A weakening of faith in God, a rise in selfishness and a drop in the number of people going to Mass can be traced to liturgical abuse or Masses that are not reverent, two Vatican cardinals and a consultant have said.

US Cardinal Raymond Burke, head of the Vatican’s supreme court, said: “If we err by thinking we are the centre of the liturgy, the Mass will lead to a loss of faith.”

Cardinal Burke and Spanish Cardinal Antonio Cañizares Llovera, prefect of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Sacraments, spoke yesterday at a book launch in Rome.

The book, published only in Italian, was written by Fr Nicola Bux, who serves as a consultant to the congregations for the doctrine of the faith and for saints’ causes and to the office in charge of papal liturgies.

The English translation of Fr Bux’s book title would be, How to Go to Mass and Not Lose Your Faith.

Cardinal Burke told those gathered for the book presentation that he agreed with Fr Bux that “liturgical abuses lead to serious damage to the faith of Catholics”.

Cardinal Burke weakens the faith

I would be curious as to why "anonymous" feels that way about him? I don't meet that in a mocking way, but I think there does perhaps need to be a conversation on the topic of evangelization, catechesis, and the place of liturgy.

I only say this because I've been really pondering it since the election of Pope Francis. For full disclosure I love traditional Liturgy, and have a deep respect for Cardinal Burke. However, I often wonder if due to our culture the notions of mystery and symbolism are so incredibly lost that many of the exquisite celebrations of liturgy can actually be a turn off to those who don't "get it". While this is clearly an issue of catechesis, it is also a problem of evangelization which is a bigger issue, because even if someone is taught the symbols of worship, if they haven't experienced Christ and His Church in a personal way, they are often inclined to see these things as pompous excesses, and not as things that do glorify our Eucharistic Lord.

For the record, I'm not advocating any changes to the Liturgy, or the beauty with which Benedict has modeled for us over the last several years. I do however want to really have a serious conversation on the place of the experience of authentic Liturgy as it relates to the New Evangelization.

Hi Matt your above Comment to Anonymous made me laugh! Poor souls that throw out barbs without facts to substantiate claims! By the way when and where was the book presentation I did not see it in the article.

I am happy we still have our Cardinal! Praying very much for Pope Francis that he will if he reforms Vatican curiae that he will initiate Liturgical reforms concerning the Holy Eucharist! It seems simplistic but I firmly believe the abyss the world is on concerns the Fatima Message in particular the apparition of the Angel in 1916 reveling Eucharistic Reparation for Sacrileges. Abortion is also a grave malady but I believe that God would have sent his mother to end it like she did at Guadeloupe with the Human Sacrifices.

What are we doing for Heavens Sake to Catechize the people? Even deacons and priests are in need. Every particle is the Lord! What are we doing to the particles that are left behind in our pyx's after we take Communion to the sick! I have heart wrenching stories!

I also experienced from liberal Churches here and in Rome priests using large hosts and some of them break the consecrated host over their heads! After Mass I went up to a circular altar and particles were everywhere! Probably from a weeks worth of Masses! Our Lord was being trampled underfoot and was ending up in a vacuum cleaner!

It needs to be fixed these sacrileges or I fear our days are numbered! The Miracle of the Sun may be a cleansing for our days! See Particles of the Blessed Sacrament--The ETERNAL LIFE GIVING GOLD DUST! http://speramus-hope.blogspot.com/2011/01/particles-of-blessed-sacrament-eternal.html#links
Blessed Holy Week and Easter Season!

Speaking to JoshD, I can say, having attending numerous liturgies by Cardinal Burke, and having spoke with him many times, that while I think he's a lovely individual and a devout man, but his resurrection of liturgical garb that looks dated, and ostentatious (and sometimes has even been suppressed (Gallero)) is very off putting. I'm not a Catholic living in the pre-vatican II Italy. I'm a North American in the 21st century.

Now, I totally agree a reverent liturgy with vestments and buildings made of noble materials is important to elevate Worship; but not when those action, vestments, and buildings become idols and distract us.

Which way the priest faces, whether he wears old-school chasubles, and whether the faithful receive on the tongue or on the hand is to me all irrelevant so long as the worship is heartfelt and genuine.

TAq, honest question, how do you know if worship is heartfelt and genuine?

I would argue that you can't know if someones worship is heartfelt or genuine. I mean, if they're talking during mass and being blatantly disrespectful it certainly gives you good evidence that they're not taking the liturgy seriously. But if a priest is reverently saying a Mass of Paul the VI ad populem or a recipient of the eucharist respectfully presents themselves to receive the Eucharist with hand over hand, we have to swallow our pride and presumption and give them the benefit of the doubt that their worship is equal in sincerity to our own.
