The ensuing media storm led the diocese’s communications director to step down — it wasn’t the job she’d signed up for.
Needing a quick replacement, the Kalamazoo bishop tapped Brent King, a numbers guy working in the diocese’s finance office.
“It was a baptism by fire,” said King, 25 at the time. “I was taking media calls having never done that before or been formally trained in anything like that.”
