Des Plaines Guadalupe Shrine team debates new church size

Just how big should the new basilica at the shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe in Des Plaines be?

That’s what planners and Archdiocese of Chicago officials are trying to figure out.

The Rev. Marco Mercado, who took over as rector of the shrine at the beginning of 2013, said they are debating seating for somewhere between 1,500 and 3,500 people.

He hoped master planning for the structure, which would be among the largest churches dedicated to Our Lady of Guadalupe outside of the one in Mexico City, would be presented to the Archdiocese for approval by mid 2014.

Once given the go ahead, work could begin on the new basilica.
