More than 65,000 Wisconsin catholics officially have a new leader on Thursday after the Most Rev. James Patrick Powers was ordained as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Superior.

It was a rare and historic moment for the diocese's 110-year history and hundreds witnessed a celebratory and intricate ordination mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King.

Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the special emissary of Pope Francis read aloud the Holy Father's blessing.
Bishop Powers has degrees from St. John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas, and St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul. He also studied at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada.
