Bishop Powers of Superior on the current abuse crisis
Once again we are all hurt, confused and angered by the recent news of Archbishop McCarrick’s abuses, the grand jury report from Pennsylvania, and the accusations against Pope Francis. As we move forward, the way is not totally clear, but I vow with the help of God to do everything in my power to lead our diocese with transparency and integrity in all things.continue at SupCH
First and foremost, I offer my prayers and support for justice and healing to all victims of clergy abuse. Second, I offer my apologies for Church cover-ups and lack of transparent action, which led to sexual abuse of both children and adults, including seminarians. Third, I strongly encourage any victims of Catholic Church sexual abuse to bravely come forward and report the crimes committed against them. Finally, I ask for prayers of support for the great majority of our holy priests and bishops, who will continue their good and dedicated service to all of us and our Catholic Church.
As a priest and pastor, I have fully supported the 2002 Charter for the Protection of Children and Young People, and believe that the Diocese of Superior has taken every step possible to prevent abuse from happening in our diocese since its adoption 16 years ago. I am not aware of any currently serving priests or parish staff in our Diocese that are known or rumored to be abusers. I firmly believe that any of our active or retired priests would come to me if they have any knowledge of abuse. We have been carefully following the safety guidelines of the charter since 2002. Independent auditors have consistently found our diocese to be in compliance with all audited articles within the charter, most recently in July of 2018.

More than 65,000 Wisconsin catholics officially have a new leader on Thursday after the Most Rev. James Patrick Powers was ordained as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Superior.
It was a rare and historic moment for the diocese's 110-year history and hundreds witnessed a celebratory and intricate ordination mass at the Cathedral of Christ the King.
Archbishop Carlo Maria Vigano, the special emissary of Pope Francis read aloud the Holy Father's blessing.
Bishop Powers has degrees from St. John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas, and St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul. He also studied at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada.continue at WDIO

Consecration of James P. Powers as new bishop of Superior Diocese Feb 18
SUPERIOR – Liturgies related to the ordination of Bishop James P. Powers as the 11th bishop of the Diocese of Superior are open to the public.SupCathHerald
Solemn Vespers will be celebrated at 7 p.m., Wednesday, Feb. 17, at the Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, with a reception to follow in Kress Hall.
Bishop Powers will be ordained at 2 p.m., Thursday, Feb. 18, in the Cathedral of Christ the King, Superior, with a reception to follow.
Both liturgies and receptions are open to the public. However, given the seating capacity of the Cathedral, seating will be available on a first-come, first-served basis with accommodations for overflow viewing of the ordination in Kress Hall.
Planners of these events ask that parishioners notify their parish office if they plan to attend. Parishes will be asked to provide an estimated count by Thursday, Feb. 4, in order that organizers can plan adequately for hospitality.
Those unable to attend the ordination will, due to the generosity of several area businesses and organizations, be able to watch the liturgy live on WDIO-TV, Channels 10/13, the ABC affiliate in Duluth/Superior. The Mass will also be simulcast on EWTN as well as live-streamed at www.wdio.com. That link will be made available as well on the Diocese of Superior website: www.catholicdos.org.

continue at USCCBPope Francis has named Fr. James Powers, 62, as bishop of Superior, Wisconsin; Fr. Powers is a priest of the diocese and serves as diocesan administrator.
The appointment was publicized in Washington, December 15 by Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, apostolic nuncio to the United States.
Bishop-elect Powers was born February 6, 1953 in Baldwin, Wisconsin. He was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Superior on May 20, 1990. He holds a bachelor's in theology and a master's of divinity from St. John Vianney Seminary at the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minnesota, and at St. Paul Seminary in St. Paul. He pursued graduate studies in canon law at St. Paul University in Ottawa, Canada.
Powers was the diocesan administrator after Christensen left.
