Anti-porn speaker visiting UW-La Crosse: Lecture comes after porn star's controversial November booking

A guest lecturer will argue that pornography corrupts the brain and erodes relationships during an appearance at the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse on Thursday.

Parker Hymas, communications manager for Fight the New Drug, an anti-porn organization out of Salt Lake City, will speak at 8 p.m. in the Bluffs Room of the Student Union.

Leaders from Cru, a Christ-based student group, said they have tried for years to book a speaker from Fight the New Drug, redoubling their efforts after a porn star’s controversial lecture at UW-L during the fall semester.

“We wanted our community on campus to just hear the facts about pornography and the true effects of it. A lot of people look at it for pleasure, and they’re not aware of what’s occurring in our brains,” said Cru President Hannah Bontrager, a junior psychology major at UW-L.

UW president reprimands UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow over visit of former porn star to campus

University of Wisconsin System President Ray Cross is reprimanding a chancellor for inviting a porn star to speak at his campus.

UW-La Crosse Chancellor Joe Gow paid 59-year-old porn actress Nina Hartley $5,000 out of his discretionary fund to speak on campus Nov. 1.

Two weeks later Gow said he was sorry for the media attention Hartley's visit attracted and promised to personally reimburse the school the $5,000.

The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reports that Cross reprimanded Gow in a Nov. 6 letter, saying that Gow exercised poor judgment and a potential raise regents will consider next month is now at risk.

Cross also warned Gow that he's ordering an audit of his discretionary fund.

La Crosse: What is in the water?

An interesting week for UW-La Crosse and political correctness.

First up, from Campus Reform:

A report released by the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse’s “Hate Response Team” shows that more than 10 percent of reported hate incidents were determined to be fake or frivolous.

In fact, the report notes that 28 of 192 reports were found to be either completely fake or “not a bias/hate incident,” accounting for 14 percent of all incidents reported.

And today, from Media Trackers:

The University of Wisconsin – LaCrosse appears to be on a roll these days. The hyper-sensitive campus is set to host a review of student’s Halloween costumes to ensure they do not come across as racist. UWL made headlines recently for a student’s outrage at a Harry Potter-character themed mural that, the student claimed, depicted “Man power. Cis power. Able power. Class power.”

In a comical attempt to avoid offending anyone else on campus, the Ethnic and Racial Studies Department of UW LaCrosse (which offers students classes in white privilege and “Food and Race in the United States”) is holding a Halloween costume review on October 5th. “Is Your Costume Racist?” a poster for the event queries passersby.

La Crosse Diocese sponsors Becket Fund's Hannah Smith at UW-L

Ms. Smith’s talk will address the HHS Insurance Mandate (requiring coverage of sterilization, contraception and abortion-causing drugs) in context, as just one among an alarming set of threats against the religious liberty of men and women of every faith community.  This will be a powerful and relevant talk no matter what the Supreme Court rules on the healthcare law this summer.

The Washington, D.C. based Becket Fund has defended the religious liberty of all manner of believers since its founding in 1994. It was the first law firm in the nation to file suit against the HHS Mandate, representing Colorado Christian University, Belmont Abbey College and others.

Before joining the Becket Fund in 2007, Ms. Smith clerked for Supreme Court Justices Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. She has been interviewed frequently on national television and by other major media, including the Wall Street Journal, the Washington Post, the Los Angeles Times, the Associated Press, U.S. News and World Report, and National Public Radio.

World-leading Marxist economist to speak at UW-La Crosse

The University of Wisconsin – La Crosse will be hosting an internationally acclaimed Marxist economist next week as part of a lecture series featuring international scholars. Prabhat Patnaik, of India, has worked in academics and government in India and advised the United Nations on measures to reform the global financial system. The current state of the global economy will be the topic of Mr. Patnaik’s speech next Thursday.

For at least two decades Patnaik edited the Journal of Social Scientists, a publication of the Indian School of Social Sciences in New Dehli. It appears to have last been published in 2001, and it served as a reliable mouthpiece for Marxist economic thought in Asia.
