He was one of the three names I heard people chatting about.
There's also the somewhat troubling quote,
Callahan said Weakland’s legacy in the church is not just his mistakes but also some of the good he did, including shaping the modern mass. But not to be a negative ninny, I would like to congratulate Bishop Callahan on his appointment. Any bishop in Milwaukee would be in a very tough position to critique a former archbishop, even one as unstable as Arch Weakland.
On October 30, 2007, Bishop-designate Callahan was appointed auxiliary bishop of Milwaukee. He was the first Conventual Franciscan to be named a bishop in the United States. (St Francis is the secondary patron of the Diocese of La Crosse).
The Diocese of La Crosse have a section on their website.
“I am extremely happy that a wonderful bishop has been appointed to a great diocese. All of us in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, especially this new archbishop, will miss his administrative leadership, his thoughtful insight, and especially his love for the Church. Our prayers and support go with him as he responds to this new call.” - Archbishop Listecki
“I offer my congratulations to Bishop William Callahan and to the priests and people of God in the Diocese of La Crosse as I learn of his appointment, by the Holy Father, to shepherd the Catholic community of southwestern Wisconsin. He will bring the warm and faithful heart of a pastor to this new responsibility in the Church. I shall miss his presence in Milwaukee greatly, as I have come to know him as a thoughtful colleague, a hard-working partner and a new friend whose gifts I treasure.” - Bishop Sklba
A news conference to introduce Bishop William P. Callahan will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the Holy Cross Diocesan Center, 3710 East Avenue South, La Crosse, WI.
I've got a busy couple days here, but I'll pass on things as I get a chance

This appointment is a great disappointment!
My thought is this was thought to be the "safe" pick from Rome's perspective. At first glance it doesn't make sense, but perhaps there is more than meets the eye...
Or perhaps he'll ditch the new organ at the Cathedral for guitars and tambourines... Time will tell.
He has done confirmations in the EF at our Tridentine Parish in Milwaukee, St. Stan's. That is a good sign.
Here's the link to some pictures from that Confirmation:
