Bishop Callahan's to visit Umberger's St. Pats weekend after installation

La Crosse (WQOW) - The new bishop of the La Crosse Diocese plans to make an important announcement not long after he's installed.

Bishop William Callahan will be installed as the 10th bishop of the diocese next week. He's succeeding Jerome Listecki, who's now the archbishop of Milwaukee. Bishop Callahan will begin the job with questions surrounding the leadership of a specific Catholic church.

Father Patrick Umberger has been charged with possession of child pornography. He was the priest at St. Patrick's in Onalaska. Over the weekend, parishioners were told that he has resigned.

"That is going to be the first parish I'm going to visit," said Bishop Callahan. "I will be there the weekend after my installation. That's the first place I'm going. I hope to be able to announce when I go there -- a new pastor for the parish."

News 18 will broadcast the installation of Bishop Callahan on Wednesday, August 11th on WQOW and WQOW.com beginning at 2 p.m.

We pray every day for Bishop-elect Callahan.
God bless him in every way.
What an incredible mess he has to deal with by coming to La Crosse.
This whole thing just has me beside myself; the police report, giving such detail to such absolute sacrilege, violation, and downright obscenity is enough for me to vomit; literally.
I, as a priest, cannot imagine how a parent whose children were once under his charge must feel knowing that this priest was willingly lusting after adolescent males. I'm upset; I can't imagine being a father of young boys who Fr. Pat had access to on a regular basis; I'd be absolutely in a "melt down".
And how does this help the faithful entrust their children to us, as priests, when someone who "looked good" was in fact, indulging in child porn, masturbating to it, lusting after children? Good Lord, have mercy!
I'm mad as hell right now; I admit it. I have to deal with it.
But the new Bishop has got a "hornet's nest" and God help him...Mary intercede for him!
Fr. Umberger has condemned himself; he is his own worst enemy.
Jesus, mercy!

Quote from Bishop-elect Callahan in a story in today's La Crosse Tribune:
"My coming is a little bit different, because I'm not coming in with degrees after my name. I am basically a parish priest. I want to come in with a pastor's heart," he said, and bring along the teachings of Jesus. "We have a common faith, so let's try to work from there."

I really feel the new Bishop's background (or lack therof) will be a huge benefit for all of us in his quest for 'building trust' in his new diocese.
I'm hoping he'll bring a common man's point of view to his perspective.
