Scythian, the best live band I have ever seen

And they are playing at Irishfest in Milwaukee this weekend.  La Crosse had its (mini) Irishfest last weekend.  It is very well done and brings in some huge acts to a smaller Irishfest venue.

Back to Scythian(pronounced sith-ee-yin), I have seen a lot of live music in my day, from Korn to Beck to Vanilla Ice to Trace Adkins.  I've seen Scythian twice now and they are clearly the best live music performance I've ever seen.

Three of the four band members were classically trained.  The lead singer Dan Fedoryka(and I think a few other members) attended Franciscan University of SteubenvilleAccording to a 2007 newsletter, Dr. John Crosby who teaches at Steubenville is father to two band members, but the bands site only shows one Crosby (Josef Crosby).  At any rate, there is a strong Catholic presence in the band.  I shook Josef Crosby's hand after the show and wished them well.

Scythian Milwaukee Irishfest Schedule is below.  If you are in the area, I'd recommend you check them out.  You won't be disappointed.

Friday - 7 pm - High Life Stage/Parkview Apts
Saturday - 10 pm - The Tipperary Stage
Sunday - 6:30 pm - High Life Stage/Parkview Apts

"I have seen a great number of bands in my years, though only a few can relate to the crowd the way Scythian does. I have seen this band in a club setting and on a stage in front of 5000 people, and they whip a crowd into a frenzy! Tight grooves, outstanding musicianship, and a spontaneity that few bands possess, I will be booking this band at Summerfest for years to come!"

With so many new bands in the Celtic market...Scythian stands out. They're innovative and fun: a blend of classical, Gyspy, bluegrass and Celtic music. While you're sure to enjoy their CDs, nothing can match their live shows where audience participation and dancing is a prerequisite.

PS> Second best live performance, Beck.

Hehe... soooo awesome to see people catching on to this band.

when I went to Ave Law we had them TWICE for our Fall Fest... and for our Irish Lawyers Club shindig.

I also had the pleasure of attending a Wedding where they were the band.

Their live performance is exactly as you described: THE BEST.

Very nice Joe!

Yes, live music is its own animal. Bands good in recording booths are not always so savvy out there with the people(and no editing). But Scythian has an energy and connection with the audience, not to mention flawless performance of their music, that is hard to come by.

Damian Fedoryka was the President of Christendom College for a number of years and IIRC had about eleven chilluns. Most likely that singer is one of them.

AHA!! Watched the vid. Fedoryka speaks Russian, which confirms his lineage; the family spent a number of years in Russia after Damian left Christendom. I think he taught in/founded (?) a college over there.

Incredible Dad29! I had not heard that before. He has two sons in the band then, Dan and Leks.

I even found corroborating evidence:

Both Fedoryka's and Crosby attended Stubenville together.

Dr. Damian Fedoryka has been active since 1992 in the effort to rebuild the Ukrainian Catholic Church after the fall of communism. This fast-moving interview focuses on, first, the efforts of the Church to instruct a generation taught to believe that God does not exist, and second, the widespread suffering and hardship caused by the collapsed state of the Ukrainian economy. Dr. Fedoryka is involved in the training of seminarians and catechizing university students; his stories of the re-emerging faith of young Ukrainians are refreshing and inspiring.
