Relevant Radio Celebrates 10 years

The Relevant Radio Catholic radio network is celebrating 10 years of broadcasting the Catholic faith over the airwaves this month.

Relevant Radio will hold several celebrations this year, beginning with a 10th anniversary Summer Celebration Aug. 31. The day will begin at St. Francis Xavier Cathedral, 140 S. Monroe St., Green Bay, with a Meet and Greet at 10 a.m., the Rosary at 10:30 a.m., and Mass at 11 a.m. with Bishop David Ricken. The Blessing of the Relevant Radio Headquarters, located 1496 Bellevue St., Green Bay, will take place at 12:30 p.m. with tours and Meet & Greet immediately afterward.

Relevant Radio has grown over the past 10 years and now has 12 stations and 21 affiliates in 12 states, with a potential listening audience of 25 million people. Relevant Radio owns WJOK (1050 AM) in Green Bay, WYNW (92.9 FM) in Wausau, and WMMA (93.9 FM) in Wisconsin Rapids. Relevant Radio affiliates include WLCJ (92.5 FM) in Marinette, W270BC (101.9 FM) in Peshtigo, and WRGW (94.5 FM) in Shawano.

“Relevant Radio has delivered 225,000,000 man hours of ‘truth in charity’ over the past 10 years leading to conversions, new found hope, and enthusiasm for the Catholic faith,” said Rev. Francis Hoffman, Relevant Radio executive director.

The parent company of Relevant Radio is Starboard Media Foundation, Inc. The company began as Christ the King Communications in August 2000, when a few local businessmen came together and formed CTK. WJOK (1050 AM) was then purchased and went on the air Nov. 26, 2000, with a Feast of Christ the King Mass Live from St. Francis Xavier Cathedral in Green Bay.

The Board of Directors changed the corporate name to Starboard, in honor of the Petrine ministry and the Church’s mission, remembering Jesus’ words to “cast the net off to the starboard side” (John 21:6). Starboard continued to evolve and eventually developed original produced, live-interactive talk radio programs, doing business under the name Relevant Radio. Its debut drive-time program, Morning Air, was launched on April 21, 2003. On Aug. 2, 2004, the Drew Mariani Show debuted in afternoon drive-time.

Sustaining the mission and plans for growth continue to be the priority for chairman Tom Vorpahl. “As we complete a decade of proclaiming the Good News through our media platform, we are encouraged by the continuous enthusiasm of our listeners, who have chosen to generously support this mission both prayerfully and financially.”

Although I no longer support Relevant Radio financially after they dropped the Catholic Answers Live radio program, I do acknowledge they do good for the faithful in our area.  I think there's plenty of people who questioned how prudent it was to dump all the programs that have established themselves(CAL, Dr. Ray Guarendi, ect)  for the "we develop our own programming" creed.  Not to say the programming is horrible, but they threw the baby out with the bathwater a few years back.  That said, I wish them success in their mission.

You are forgetting AM 1570 WKBH - La Crosse, and AM 1050 WDVM - Eau Claire!

Thank you Father, I thought there was more but I just copy/pasted the article.

By the way, I heard that you did the commentary for the Channel 8 feed of Bp Callahan's installation, I wish I could have heard it. Thank you for your witness! My family went up to greet the bishop and I had butterflies in my stomach, I hope your butterflies were flying in formation! :)

By the comments from folks over the past week, I'd say they were flying in pretty good order. I'm waiting to get my DVD copy and see how it went, but it felt pretty good. Blessings!

Do you know how I might obtain a copy? I tried looking on their website but I could not find anything. I'll post the info for anybody else interested.
