Matt, I've seen movies of the interior of old St. Joseph's Church (It was originally the German parish in La Crosse). It was pretty typical for the age, a nice looking parish church. However, I know that Bishop Treacy was recognizing the need for a space that would function both as a parish church AND as a cathedral. As a result, we have the nicest cathedral in Wisconsin and one of the nicest in the upper midwest (at least, I think so.). The windows are particularly meaningful as is the Blessed Sacrament Chapel.
Don't get me wrong Father, I do like our Cathedral. I just wish it could have kept a little bit of the Gothic flair(like the spires for example). Schulte did some other modern adaptions of the Gothic style like in Winnetka and especially Cincinnati that kept a bit more ... color and pomp I guess. I love the windows(besides the big south window), and the Blessed Sacrament chapel, side altars, large area around the altar, ect. We need only look across the river to see how bad things can end up in a Cathedral.
We have our 150th anniversary coming up so I'm starting to put together a (hopefully) comprehensive guide on our website. Do you know where I could find that video?
I've seen all but Superior's(it was locked) and I'd agree. When I visited Milwaukee's for the first time I had no idea of the wreckovation that had happened there. I was taken aback with how ugly they were able to make that church.
I still have to go to the Green Bay Cathedral, but so far LSE my favorite in WI.
St Joseph the Workman Cathedral played a small part of my journey into the faith, and was always a destination of mine when we used to live in Hudson and came home. I loved going there on Saturday afternoons and praying in the chapel and then slowly walking the stations. I would love to see what the original St Joseph's Cathedral looked like on the inside. I'm picturing something close to what Holy Trinity lookes like.
Both Superior and Duluth's cathedrals are nice and only about 2 miles apart. So far my favorite Cathedral in Upper Midwest is the Cathedral of St Paul (MN). I also second the motion about Milwaukee's cathedral.
I agree. It could have been a little more ornate in the stone work than it ended up. As for Superior, I had the same problem. The first couple of times I stopped there it was locked. I did finally get to see it. Not bad. Green Bay has done some renovating since the last time I was there. Same issue as old St. Joseph's - it's a parish church forced to function as a cathedral and it wasn't in that great of shape when I was there. They seem to have cleaned it up a bit. Just wait until the new organ is finished in La Crosse. That will definitely dress it up in the rear. And it's only 50 years old, so there's time to do a little more dressing up. As for Milwaukee - it's beautiful...if you're presbyterian. Poor Archbishop Listecki!
