The American question

Here they are:
Raymond Burke, head of the Apostolic Signature
Daniel N. DiNardo of Galveston-Houston
Timothy Dolan of New York
Francis E. George of Chicago
James M. Harvey, archpriest of the Basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls
William Levada, retired prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith
Roger M. Mahony, retired archbishop of Los Angeles
Edwin O'Brien, grand master of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre
Sean O'Malley of Boston
Justin F. Rigali, retired archbishop of Philadelphia
Donald W. Wuerl of Washington

I'm just going to say this right out front, no Italian would ever vote for +Dolan.  Period.  He's too "American."  I know that upsets a lot of US Catholics but his style fits in New York, but no so much in the Eternal City.  Etiquette matters to Europeans, and for all his strengths Dolan just does not have it.  It seems like it would be a King Ralph situation.  In addition, in this day and age it does not seem at all likely that someone outside of Rome with no Vatican experience would be elected.  Twitter accounts, blogs, media appearances, these are all useful things but have nothing to do with who will be elected the next pope.

+Harvey the Milwaukee native was involved(perhaps unknowingly) in the "vatileaks" scandal.  Reports also say that Cardinal Burke has replaced Harvey as Pope Benedict's go to guy on American appointments.  It would seem his star has set, although he's only 62.

+Levada has the experience but is probably too old(76 years).  I don't know, but then again he's got the experience.

There is really only one American that ..... will probably get at least a few votes at the conclave ..... and that is one Cardinal Raymond Burke. The man may have gotten booed on the floor of the USCCB, but there are only 10 other Americans voting. There's a few things you should know about the Cardinal. Fact: Italians love Burke. He is well thought of in the Roman Curia. He was the first non-European named to head the Tribunal of the Apostolic Signatura. Also member of the Pontifical Council for Legislative Texts, the Congregation for the Clergy, the Congregation for Bishops, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Congregation for the Causes of Saints, and the Council of Cardinals and Bishops of the Section for Relations with States of the Secretariat of State.  Basically Cardinal Burke is involved with a whole lot that is going on in Rome.  If there is one American who has been prepared by two popes now to ascend to the throne, it's the farm boy from Richland Center, Wisconsin.

Will local media do any stories on this?  Probably not, maybe MKE JS will, especially since Harvey is also a possibility.

Thomas Peters agrees that Burke is the most likely American.  We'll wait to see what the talking heads say on the news but they did have Ratzinger on the short list leading up to the last election.  But I've already seen someone on Twitter say no way to Burke because he is "divisive." Funny, that's precisely what they said about a man by the name of Joseph Ratzinger a few years ago.   As to the rest of the Americans, just dropping someone into the chair on top of Rome without some experience I think would seem to a voting cardinal as a dangerous situation.  It has got to be someone who knows the inner workings of the Church and her politics.  I don't think that Burke would be the most likely candidate but if there is any American listed, it is this guy.

If in the event that Cdl. Burke or Cdl. Dolan is elected, would it be too much to change the license plates to "America's Papalland" ???

Cardinal Burke would be a wonderful choice. The CINO's, the wayward Sisters, and the so called Catholic politicians would all wail and cry injustice!

Yes to both your points on Burke. He is unlikely, but the ONLY possible American to be considered.

If he walks out on that balcony, you should do two things:

1. Fall on your knees and thank God for His love for us, and for the Holy Ghost's protection of the Church.

2. Get your bug out bag in order.

I would pay for that! is there a triple-tiara on the side?

timman, be glad you are not on Twitter, it makes me want to plant my head into my keyboard sometimes.

In the past even the thought would get me choked up, but now I'm almost afraid it would happen. Many of his apostolates would need to find other leaders I'm afraid. .... basically I'm trying not to think about it... an April swim across the Mississippi might be in order.

If only it were probable. Imagine all the money that the betting houses would lose (not that it matters :-P ) The shine could get a huge boost out in La Cross and plus the first Papal visit to WI...well that was a great thought back to reality

... having the same discussion with lots of people. Would the media try to ignore it completely? Would anyone come? I have no idea, all bets are off.

As I said in a post on my blog yesterday, Cardinal Burke becoming Pope would really PO all those here in the USA who are still trying to push the Church into OKing birth control women's ordination etc.
BTW like the new background, why the remodel of the blog?

Amigos: if the Blessed Mother can come TO Wisconsin, the pope can definitely come FROM Wisconsin.

I needed to find some busy work as I was anxious over losing our Holy Father's leadership, LOL.

In the grand scheme of things, the US episcopacy is small fraction of the whole. Obviously people like Wuerl would never vote for him(even if Burke is the reason they got appointed in the first place).

LOL, this is the quote of the day!!

if it came down to a Wuerl/Burke situation and a boxing ring is brought into the chapal (if cannon law permits) I dont know who I'd take, that is since Wuerl is skinny and might dance. But thats just a rambling thought

@Badger

I remember reading somewhere that the John XXIII smoked, Paul didnt, JPI did, JPII did not, and Benedict has been known to in the past. Im wondering for prediction sake if Cardinal Burke doesn't smoke...couldnt hurt his chances

:-P +JMJ+

Well if you quote me be sure to include "Amigos"

Hmmm...if Cardinal Burke does become the Holy Father, y'all can thank my folks...they've already told him he would make a good pope (he chuckled).

Oh...and since I live in Richland County, that means I get dibs on a seat in St. Mary's of Richland Center when he comes to visit...sorry :-)

Badger Catholic said...

Anon, you can have dibbs if you take pictures! I'm not even sure, has Card. Burke had Mass at St. Mary's since he's become Cardinal? Maybe they keep that stuff on the downlow.

I believe he has said Mass once since he has become Cardinal, but I'm not sure.

His former pastor at Stratford, Fr. Joseph Keating (the priest for whom Cardinal Burke first served Mass) is now living in a retirement home in R.C.

I'm sure I can talk to Fr. Keating to get me a seat....

Oh, and yes I'll take pics and share them....

I'll let the Holy Spirit move the Cardinals to whom He wants but if I had a vote and it had to be an American (why do Americans want an American Pope anyway?), it'd be Burke. I shudder to think that anyone would vote for Dolan. Shudder.
