Dubuque archbishop hospitalized after heart attack

Dubuque, Iowa, May 7, 2019 / 01:20 pm (CNA).- Archbishop Michael Jackels of Dubuque, Iowa was hospitalized on Friday due to a heart attack. The archbishop was taken to Mercy Hospital on the evening of May 3.

He had two stents installed in his heart, ABC affiliate KCRG-TV9 reported.

Father Nils Hernandez, pastor of Trinity Cluster, a grouping of parishes in Monona, Iowa, said the archbishop is doing well but called for prayers.

“The Archbishop is in good spirits and feeling better. He will be in the hospital for a few days,” said Nils on Facebook, relaying an email from the diocese. “Please keep him in your prayers for a full recovery.”

[+]Jackels was raised as a Catholic, but said he stopped going to mass in high school. After his college experiences with Buddhism, he came back to Catholicism after a fellow dishwasher at a college job handed him a pocket New Testament. He then traveled to Guatemala with the Maryknoll missionaries, cementing his return to Christianity.

He said he realized the things that attracted him to the Buddhist temple were also present in the Catholic church – things like chanting and incense as part of spirituality – but he felt he could better understand the deeper meaning in Catholicism.

Dubuque Archdiocese settles clergy sex abuse cases for $5.2 million

DUBUQUE, Iowa (AP) — The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Dubuque will pay $5.2 million to 26 people who have claimed clergy sex abuse, according to a settlement announced Wednesday.

Archbishop Michael Jackels and Archbishop Emeritus Jerome Hanus apologized in a statement to the victims and their families, and expressed hope that the settlement will be supportive of them.

"They assure all the victims of their prayers for them and their families," said a statement from Sister Carol Hoverman, the communications director for the archdiocese.

The statement said priests who abused are a "disgrace to the vocation and a scandal to the faithful."

"The vast majority of priests are good and holy servants of God and God's people," said the statement.

The cases involve 10 priests and alleged abuse between the 1940s and 1970s, the Waterloo-Cedar Falls Courier reported (http://bit.ly/14DBlF9 ). None of the accused clergy work as priests today, and most are dead.

Only hours after a formal announcement from the Vatican, Dubuque Archbishop Jerome Hanus helped introduce his successor to the public.

The former Bishop of Wichita, Kan., Michael O. Jackels, was appointed by Pope Francis as the 12th head of the Dubuque Catholic Archdiocese, which includes 30 counties in Northeast Iowa. The papal nuncio, or official Vatican representative to the United Sates, announced the changes Monday in Washington, D.C.

Hanus, 72, tendered his resignation last year to former Pope Benedict XVI, citing declining health especially since a serious traffic accident a year ago. Jackels’ appointment is one of the first batch of assignments the new pope made.

Both men and former Archbishop Daniel Kucera, who was in attendance in his wheelchair, were applauded by staff.

“They love you already,” Kucera quipped, as an enthusiastic audience in the archdiocesan pastoral center clapped loudly. Jackels, 58, served as the 10th bishop of Wichita for eight years. Before that, he worked in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith in Rome under then Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger who became Pope Benedict.

Jackels often cited his episcopal motto during his comments Monday.

“Ecce adsum. Here I am, Michael Jackels, introducing myself to the people God has called me to serve,” he said, arms out as he offered himself in service. “I beg your prayers and patience,” as he learns about the “personality” of the Dubuque Archdiocese and its 200,000 Catholics.

Archbishop-designate Jackels had been serving as Bishop of Wichita, Kansas.

Promotes Eucharistic Adoration, was chaplain for School Sisters of Christ the King who wear habits & are NOT part of the LCWR. Respect Life office is sponsoring a 1st Saturday Rosary (beginning next month) in front of the newly reopened abortion clinic that used to be run by Tiller.

Looks like there's a new sheriff in town.

In a statement released this morning, Hanus, 72, said, "As many of you know, my health has declined in recent years. As a result, some time ago I submitted my resignation as Archbishop to the proper authorities. In a recent telephone conversation, the Pope’s representative in the United States, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, informed me that our Holy Father, Pope Francis, had accepted my resignation and appointed as the next Archbishop of Dubuque, the Most Rev. Michael O. Jackels, currently Bishop of Wichita, Kansas. My immediate response to the selection of him as my successor was: 'I am thrilled.'"

Jackels, who turns 59 on April 13, is the current bishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Wichita, Kan., appointed by Pope John Paul II on Jan. 28, 1995. He is a native of Rapid City, S.D., who moved frequently as a child of a military family from Wyoming to Spain to California before settling in Nebraska.

Prior to joining Kentucky’s St. Pius X Seminary in 1975, Jackels attended the University of Nebraska. He holds a bachelor’s degree in philosophy from St. Pius X and a master’s in theology from Mt. Saint Mary’s Seminary in Emmitsburg, Md. He earned his doctorate in sacred theology in 1989 from Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas in Rome.
