So the examination of conscience is still a second-grade exam — “Did I pull my sister’s hair or disobey my parents?” It should be: “How am I treating my co-workers? Do I tell white lies on a daily basis? Have I harbored grudges or forgiven people? How do I treat my wife?”

Were you ever shocked by a penance a priest gave you personally?
At the time after college, in my heart I had been away from the Church and finally went to confession. It was a missionary priest. He gave me a penance of one Hail Mary. I said, “Isn’t there more than that?!”
He said to me, “There is, but I’m going to be fasting for you for the next month.” It was incredible to realize that’s what he did. It was a really powerful reality for me to know that. I didn’t realize that priests are required to do penance for the people who go to confession to them. It was striking.

His attorney, Paul Engh, argued Thursday that there was no record Stitts ever gave his consent for other priests to share information, and the privilege "doesn't evaporate on death."
Archdiocese attorney Thomas Wieser said "there's nothing more sacred in the Catholic Church" than the confidentiality of the confessional.
Noaker wants Judge John Van de North to order Rice and two other priests to answer additional questions about Stitts. Van de North took the matter under advisement Thursday.
John Doe 104 sued the archdiocese in 2013, alleging Stitts sexually abused him in the 1970s at St. Leo's in the Highland Park neighborhood of St. Paul and at St. George's at Long Lake while Stitts was serving at Long Lake.
I guess we could get technical and try to figure out what is protected under "spiritual direction" or "confession" although many times they end up being the same person.

Got a hankering to repent? There will soon be an “app” for that.
A Roman Catholic prelate from Wisconsin will become the first priest to log on to a soon-to-debut smart-phone application that seemingly renders the good ole’ fashioned church bulletin as outmoded as medieval indulgences, the New York Daily News reports.
According to the paper, the so-called My Confessor App will allow the faithful to keep up digitally with when their local priest is hearing confession, or the sacrament wherein Catholics recount sins to a “confessor” who , in turn, doles out penance, usually in the form of prayers.
“I want people to not feel uncomfortable asking about confession,” the Rev. Richard Heilman told the paper. “We want everybody ignited in the Holy Spirit.”
When accessed, the app will reportedly portray a red status box, which means “Father is OUT,” or a green status box meaning, “Father is IN.” It also includes a description of Reconciliation, as well as related tips.
