Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle. 2 Thes 2:15
When Pope Francis comes to Philadelphia, Sept. 25-27, he will meet with families from around the world at the conclusion of the World Meeting of Families. He will also be celebrating two Masses. The first will be celebrated on Sept. 26 at the Cathedral Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul, Philadelphia, and the second on Sept. 27 on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway. The Mass on Saturday will be a commemoration of Our Lady, Mother of the Church, while the Sunday Mass will be the Mass celebrated on the 26th Sunday of Ordinary Time.continue at Adoremus Bulletin
Organizing the liturgy for these two celebrations of the Mass has been the work of archdiocesan liturgist Father Dennis Gill – who has accomplished what some might consider a superhuman feat.
Father Gill is rector and pastor of the Cathedral Basilica of Ss. Peter and Paul, the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of Philadelphia, and Director of the Office for Divine Worship, for the Archdiocese of Philadelphia. He was ordained a priest on May 21, 1983 for the archdiocese and served as parochial vicar at Nativity of Our Lord Parish, Warminster, Penn., and Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish, Southampton, Penn. Completing graduate studies in Sacred Liturgy at the Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C., and the Pontifical Liturgical Institute of St. Anselmo, Rome, Father Gill served as Director of Liturgy at the Pontifical North American College, Rome. He is a professor of Sacred Liturgy at St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, and lectures regularly around the country on sacred liturgy. He is the author of the book Music in Catholic Liturgy: A Pastoral and Theological Companion to Sing to the Lord, and is working on his next book, Ars Celebrandi: An Artful and Careful Celebration of the Eucharist, for Hillenbrand Books.
AB: Besides the “universal language” of music present at the Mass, what other languages will be used?
FG: What’s interesting is that the Creed will be sung in Latin at the Sunday Mass on the Parkway. It’s an international occasion and Latin is the international language of the Church; it just seems right….The Eucharistic Prayer will also be prayed in Latin, while the two largest groups of people coming beside English speaking people are Spanish and Vietnamese. So one scriptural reading will be in Spanish and one will be in Vietnamese.
Morlino said he hopes the pope will spend some time in the U.S. talking about the recent papal encyclical on the environment. While many people have come to think of it as a document primarily about climate change, Morlino said it more broadly addresses how respect for the environment “must flow out of respect for the ecology of human nature.”WBAY: Green Bay Group Embarks on Pilgrimage to see Pope Francis
That means respect for the sacredness of life, respect for marriage as an institution between a man and a woman, and respect for the fact that “God created each person with his or her own gender, and he didn’t make mistakes,” Morlino said.
Bishop David Ricken joined the group on their pilgrimage. He’ll meet Pope Francis face-to-face on Wednesday. If he would have just come here, we wouldn't need the cutout.
“Pope Francis is very appealing to people he knows, people’s lives, their experiences, and he touches those lives with what he has to say, he offers the mercy of Jesus to people, he’s just a wonderful,” said Bishop Ricken. “First of all he’s a priest, and now he’s the pope, you know, the shepherd of the world.”

They also will visit Daylesford Abbey, a Norbertine community outside Philadelphia. The Rev. Andrew Ciferni, director of the Center of Norbertine Studies at St. Norbert College in De Pere and parochial vicar for the college parish, is a member of Daylesford Abbey.Fox6: As pope lands in U.S., delegations from Milwaukee head east
Ciferni also wrote the words for the official hymn of this year’s World Meeting of Families. The song “Sound the Bell of Holy Freedom” was selected in December.
Archbishop Jerome Listecki says Pope Francis is all about the gospel, and people are listening.JS: When the pope was in our backyard — in 1979
"He's a leader who's drawn attention to making sure that we never forget our obligation to those who are in need around the world. I believe that 's the attraction by so many within the Catholic church and outside of the Catholic church," Listecki said.

Sisters Louise (left) and Rita Paul from St. Anne’s Home for the Elderly wait for Pope John Paul II to celebrate Mass in Chicago on Oct. 5, 1979. |
This week's visit marks 50 years since the first papal visit to the United States by Pope Paul XI, but Chris Rogers, Director of Youth and Young Adult Ministry for the Diocese of La Crosse, says Pope Francis is unlike any other.
“Just having him here, having him among us, close to us, that we can see him, experience him, and listen to him presently as we're with him," he said. "And this Pope, he's something else, he's getting a lot of attention, he's doing so much to encourage us to take care of the environment, to take care of each other. And people are listening.”
CONAN: How did this happen?Conan(video)
Jim: six months ago I got an email inviting me to be as -- at this event in Philadelphia for pope Francis.
I thought oh, this is nice.
The Bishop of Philadelphia invited me and I thought this is great.
My wife is very catholic.
She's like a Shiite Catholic so she was thrilled.
And then a couple of weeks ago the organizers came that -- to a show I was going if -- doing in Atlantic City and they were like how long do you want to do it?
And I'm like oh, I'm performing?
Yes.
Does he know English?
No, he doesn't.
It will be translated and then what I realized is that I'm going to be performing in front of the pope and over a million people outside in Philadelphia
--
CONAN: That's the most insane gig I've ever heard of before.
Jim: I keep thinking there's going to be a phone call where they're going to be like oh, we just watched your standup.
We're changing our minds.
Laura Antoine, representing Our Lady of Guadalupe of La Crosse, is going to the 2015 World Meeting of Families in Philadelphia, and while there she will see Pope Francis.
"Well it's pretty exciting. It's probably a once in a lifetime chance to do that- his first trip to the United States as Pope, so definitely very exciting."
She will be showcasing the Shrine to the Catholic community. She said, "I think it's important to share our shrine with people from around the world. Even though it feels like it's been in La Crosse forever, we just celebrated our 7th anniversary here, the church being completed."
The Pope will be in Philadelphia September 26th and 27th.
