In releasing names of priests with substantiated allegations, Bishop Ricken offers apology
ALLOUEZ — During a press briefing Jan. 17 to announce the release of 47 names of priests with substantiated allegations of sexual abuse of a minor, Bishop David Ricken apologized to victims-survivors.continue at The Compass
“The release of these names may open up old wounds and create new hurt,” he said in his opening statement. “For this I am profoundly sorry. But I want to recognize the victims-survivors for their strength over the years in coming forward to tell their stories. The hurt they endured at the hands of their perpetrators cannot be undone. I could apologize, but more importantly, I need to show them through action that we are being open and addressing this issue head-on.”
Bishop Ricken also said the priorities that were outlined in the seven “Action Steps to Accountability,” which were published Sept. 7, 2018, in The Compass, still remain.
“The victims-survivors and their families are my greatest concern,” he said. “To all of the victims-survivors and their family members, please know that you will be in my prayers, especially in these coming days.” Bishop Ricken invited abuse victims “who have been suffering in your pain and silence” to come forward and share their story, either with the diocesan Safe Environment Office or with Catholic Charities.

Hundreds expected to attend Assumption Mass at Good Help Shrine with Bp. Ricken
The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help will once again welcome hundreds of pilgrims for the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary on Wednesday, August 15, 2018. Mass with Principal Celebrant, Most Reverend David Ricken, Bishop of Green Bay, and Most Reverend Martin D. Holley, Bishop of Memphis, will take place at 11 a.m. with rosary procession to follow.
“The Feast of the Assumption is a holy day of obligation in the Catholic Church and a day Champion Shrine holds dear for our Blessed Mother,” says Father John Broussard, CPM, rector at the Champion Shrine.
The Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary celebrates the assumption of Mary into Heaven following her death. The feast day is celebrated around the world on August 15. For those who cannot attend the Shrine’s Assumption Mass, Relevant Radio will carry the mass. Usual Wednesday Mass at the Shrine will take place at 8:30 a.m. on August 15.

3,000 souls attended a few years ago, and several decades ago used to get 10,000.

“I just stopped at one of the flower beds (outside the entrance) and took my little container of ashes, and dumped him into the flower bed,” said Wolfe.

The rise in the cremation rate was also propelled by the Catholic Church. It formally approved of the practice 55 years ago, although change from tradition took time. By 1985 the cremation rate in the United States was still just 15 percent. The church remains clear about the disposition of the ashes.
“It’s really important especially for those of Christian belief, Catholic belief, we believe that we need to make sure the remains of our loved ones are buried because it’s a way of showing respect,” said Rev. David Ricken, bishop with the Green Bay Catholic Diocese.
Last December, the Green Bay Diocese offered a blessing from Ricken and free burial in its mausoleum for the cremated remains of family loved ones that never found that final resting place.

5:30am - 6:45am - Shuttle bus service from Humana Parking Lot(s) to St. Norbert College campus
7:00am - Prayer service and send off blessing - Old St. Joseph Church on St. Norbert College campus
7:15am - Start of pilgrimage - Old St. Joseph Church on St. Norbert College campus
4:45pm - Holy Mass at conclusion of pilgrimage at Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help
4:30pm - 8:00pm - Pilgrims transported by bus back to start locations and Humana parking area
Note: Confessions will be available before, during and after the pilgrimage.
Sunday, May 7 - May Celebration at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help
Each year, on the Sunday following the Walk to Mary, pilgrims are especially invited to join in the "May Celebration" at the Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help. The "Celebration" has been a part of the local faith culture since before the Apparitions of 1859.

“We’re not going to go outside when (the weather is) crazy,” said Lasnoski, who’s in his second year as a theology professor at Wyoming Catholic College.
Though Lasnoski taught one class outside as hail fell, he assures those who attend a seminar hosted by the college this weekend at The National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help in Champion that they will stay indoors. Crazy temperatures hovering around or below zero are in the forecast, after all.
Lasnoski and fellow faculty have traveled more than 1,200 miles to share insights with locals on their relatively new, uncommonly small and uniquely structured college in the middle of Wyoming.

Bishop Ricken celebrated Mass for inmates at Redgranite Correctional Institution
continue at CNSBehind a makeshift altar standing in the shadows of a basketball hoop, Bishop David L. Ricken celebrated Mass in a gymnasium that could have been mistaken for any Catholic school gym in the Diocese of Green Bay.
But the uniformed security officers stationed at the gym's entrance, as well as the two security checkpoints situated in areas outside of the athletic facility, made it clear that this was not an ordinary gymnasium.
Nor was it an ordinary Mass.
As part of the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Bishop Ricken celebrated Mass Nov. 2 for inmates at Redgranite Correctional Institution, a medium security adult male correctional institution located in the village of Redgranite, about 80 miles southwest of Green Bay.
This was a few weeks back.

Bp. Ricken to celebrate Mass for Good Help Shrine "Apparition Day" Oct 9, Relevant Radio to broadcast
Oct. 9 — Ricken will celebrate Mass at 11 a.m. on Apparition Day and present “Mary’s Message of Champion” at 12:30 p.m. to conclude the National Novena.GBPG
Relevant Radio will have a live broadcast of the Apparition Day Mass. The radio network, which includes 64 stations in 30 states, also will air a recorded version of the National Novena prayer by Ricken several times each day for the duration of the novena and play excerpts from daily programs at the shrine during the full-day Marian Retreat on the network Oct. 7.
The network can be heard locally on WJOK 1050-AM.
Well that's interesting, the wife and I are going to Green Bay for the Packer game Sunday.

Bp Ricken: Faith and end-of-life decisions
Recently I had the opportunity to be in communication with Jen Bolen, the mother of Jerika Bolen. Jerika is a 14-year old girl from Appleton who has type 2 spinal muscular atrophy, a terminal condition that is slowly shutting down the motor nerves of her body. Jerika’s mother and grandmother have cared for her with so much love since she was diagnosed as a small child.continue at The Compass
This summer, we learned of her condition through news reports after she decided to enter hospice and embark into a summer of doing many of the things she has always wanted to do. She plans to remove the ventilator that helps her to breathe toward the end of summer. We pray for the Holy Spirit to offer guidance, comfort and wisdom to the Bolen family as they journey together through August.
This situation makes us pause and reflect on how our faith plays an active role in our decisions regarding end of life. The Catholic Church has always been deeply rooted in its belief that all life is sacred, social and eternal. Death is a natural part of life, a very special part that brings us into final union with our Creator for eternity.

continue at The CompassALLOUEZ — Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin is permanently closing its abortion facility in Appleton (town of Grand Chute). The facility had stopped performing abortions last fall, due to lack of personnel. Various news outlets noted that Planned Parenthood was unable to find an abortionist.
The closing of the Grand Chute site came due to costs to update security. Several news outlets quoted Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin’s chief operating officer Chris Williams as saying that security upgrades to the Appleton site would cost an estimated $300,000, twice the value of the site.
In 2014, “Appleton North Health Clinic” performed almost 600 abortions.
“The closure of the Planned Parenthood clinic in Grand Chute is a clear indication that God is hearing our prayers,” Bishop David Ricken told The Compass on Aug. 23.
He noted that the closure happened Aug. 22, the memorial of the Queenship of Mary, adding that this is “the title (Mary) gave when appearing in Champion,” where the National Shrine of Our Lady of Good Help is located.

I actually attended last year with BC contributor Oshkosh Hermit, but we got there too late to meet Bp. Ricken. We did randomly see Gov. Walker outside the stadium.

3,000 attended the event a few years ago, which seems about the average since the approval. In 2013, Cardinal George celebrated this event. I can't find it now, but I've read that decades ago, there used to be upwards of 10,000 pilgrims in attendance for the Assumption Feast.
