Road to Canonization: Father Tolton's Remains Exhumed
QUINCY, ILL. — The Diocese of Springfield and the Archdiocese of Chicago met Saturday morning at St. Peters Cemetery.
It was all for the exhumation of the remains of Father Augustus Tolton.
"You can say this is the closest we've been able to get to him, by being so close to his remains," said Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry of the Archdiocese of Chicago.
It's the first time Bishops are meeting a man that's described as sacred and precious to Quincy and Chicago.
Bishop Perry explained, "He's a fellow priest, not only of my ethnic stripe, but a fellow priest of all the priests who've ever served in this country, and he has emerged as a model for all the good things we know, priesthood can be and should be."

St. Stanislaus Anniversary

As many of you know, St. Stanislaus in Milwaukee celebrated their 150th anniversary as a parish this past weekend. Archbishop Listecki prayed the Te Deum and presided at Benediction on Saturday evening, and Bishop Joseph Perry from Chicago presided at the Pontifical High Mass and blessing of the restored Altar on Sunday the 24th.
While I was not able to attend the Mass itself (though we did see the procession lining up on our way to St. Anthony's), we were there a few weeks ago and the restorations are incredible. Below is a link from the venerable Cream City Catholic Blog to their excellent video and wrap up for the celebration. I was especially struck at the strong emphasis on the Polish roots of the parish. Being from Chicago, and married into a Polish family, the fact that "St. Stan's" was the first Polish parish in North America and the starting point for the creation of the great Polish parishes in Milwaukee and Chicago like the Basilica of St. Josaphat, St. John Cantius, St. Mary of the Angels and so many others was truly inspiring.
If you have not had the chance yet to ever attend Mass at St. Stan's, or if you haven't been there since they began the restoration work, take the opportunity to attend. You will be truly blessed by the parish's commitment to Truth, Beauty, and Goodness.

Chicago area hospital dedicates part of cemetery for the unborn
The remains of 85 children who died before they were born were laid to rest May 9 at Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood.continue at Catholic New World
The remains were buried in a special area of the cemetery, near a new memorial stone installed by Franciscan St. James Health. All of them came from the south suburban health system’s hospitals.
Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry led the prayer service for the burial and dedicated the memorial on a cool, cloudy Monday afternoon.
He spoke of the sadness that accompanies the death of child before it is born.
“On a day a child dies before it is born, we think the sun shouldn’t shine, water shouldn’t flow and the world shouldn’t work in the pleasant, indifferent way it usually does,” Bishop Perry said. “Nothing can console you after losses like this and there are no answers to the question, ‘Why is a child allowed to die before it is born? What can make this all right? What can square this with the belief that God is good?’”
While parents might not be willing or able to see to the interment of their children’s remains, the church must reassure and support them.
“Today the need for that reassurance has not changed, even in times of miscarriage or fetal death, especially in these moments,” Bishop Perry said.

Bishop Joseph N. Perry will give a talk on the life of the Servant of God, Father Augustus Tolton, atAquinas Academy in Menomonee Falls on March 3, at 7:00PM. Father Tolton (1854-1879) was an African American priest who lived through the tumultuous years of the American Civil War. Bishop Perry serves as Diocesan Postulator for the Cause of Father Tolton’s beatification and canonization. The talk is open to the public.

Cdl Burke Pontifical Mass at St. Mary's in Wausau, WI May 31st
ICKSP - WausauThis year Divine Providence has made possible such special events such as the Pontifical Mass celebrated on May 31 by His Eminence, Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the Dedication of St. Mary’s in Wausau, as well as the annual priestly retreat for the Canons preached by the Prior General of the Institute from June 3-7 and the retreat for the Society of the Sacred Heart on the weekend of June 14-16.
I love the Institute but I rarely hear about their events. Glad I caught something as significant as this before it takes place.
The Pontifical Mass looks to be at 4:00 p.m., with confirmations that morning at 10:00 a.m.
Bp. Perry celebrated Mass at St. Stanislaus in Milwaukee on September 14,2007.
Bishop Morlino did two, in the fall of 07 and 08.
