Wisconsin Family Action prepared to pay production costs for "Choose Life" license plates

Legislators debated in a committee meeting Tuesday whether a pro-life organization should be allowed to sell specialized Wisconsin license plates to raise money to fund pregnancy resource centers.

Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc., a nonprofit organization that advocates alternatives to abortion, would be allowed to sell $40 license plates saying “Choose Life” to private citizens should the bill pass through the Assembly Committee on Transportation.

According to the bill, the plates would cost $15 each for production with an additional $25 going directly to fund Choose Life pregnancy care centers across the state.

Choose Life Wisconsin President Julaine Appling said her organization does not want to burden taxpayers with the cost of production, so the organization is prepared to pay the production costs to the Department of Transportation up front, which she estimated would be between $9,000 and $11,000.

Jacque/Lazich Introduce “Choose Life” License Plates for Wisconsin

Last week, Rep. André Jacques (R-DePere) and Sen. Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) introduced a bill last week that would establish a “Choose Life” license plate in Wisconsin. The plate has a birth certificate foot print on it and the words, “Choose Life.” Proceeds from the sale of this plate will go to Wisconsin’s Pregnancy Resource Centers to assist in their life-affirming work. NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin strongly opposes the plates.

WFA president Julaine Appling says, “We love the Choose Life Wisconsin license plate. What a great way to spread the pro-life message and also assist in funding our wonderful pregnancy resource centers. You know you are on to something good when the pro-abortion groups are upset.”

Wisconsin Family Action and Pro-Life Wisconsin have already set up the bylaws of Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc., which will disburse the proceeds from the sale of the license plates to crisis pregnancy centers for adoption assistance. Fees will include the normal license plate charge plus an additional charge of $15 for the specialty “Choose Life” plates, with an additional yearly $25 fee that provides funds to Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc.

Appling further stated, “Wisconsin Family Action will continue to work diligently with legislators to pass this pro-life bill that encourages adoption as viable option for women struggling with unplanned pregnancies.”

ProLifeWI: “Choose Life” Wisconsin License Plate Legislation Introduced

Beginning with Florida in 2000, twenty-nine states have established “Choose Life” license plates raising over $12 million for adoption assistance. Pro-Life Wisconsin would like to see Wisconsin be the 30th state  to produce and sell a “Choose Life” license plate. To that end, Representative Andre Jacque (R-De Pere) and Senator Mary Lazich (R-New Berlin) have introduced companion legislation (Assembly 206 / Senate Bill 176) to establish a “Choose Life” Wisconsin specialty license plate. The bills have been referred to the transportation committees in their respective houses.

Wisconsin Family Action and Pro-Life Wisconsin have set up the bylaws of Choose Life Wisconsin, Inc. a non-profit organization which will disburse the proceeds from the sale of the plates to pregnancy care centers for adoption assistance. In addition to the regular vehicle registration fee, those who purchase the plate are required to pay a $15 fee for issuance or reissuance of the special plates and a $25 annual fee that provides funds to Choose Life Wisconsin. Initial funds will cover Department of Transportation costs of plate production, and thereafter all funds will be distributed to pregnancy care centers throughout the state.
