Rachel Campos-Duffy: Stay-at-Home Motherhood Has Been Disparaged for Too Long

As a married mother of eight, the sacrifices made by stay-at-home moms is a topic that is near and dear to my heart.

I was an at-home mom for 14 years before I decided to go back to work for a myriad of reasons - not the least of which was financial. But those years at home were the most important years of my life. I learned so much about myself being an at-home parent.

Those years helped me build my confidence as a parent, which has proven to be so important to me as I juggle my current work in and out of our home.

Having been on both sides - an at-home mom and working outside the home - I do NOT believe that being at home makes you a better parent. In fact, for the at-home parent, there will actually be more opportunities to fall short of one’s expectations because there are so many more opportunities for interaction and failure. But that also means there are more occasions to reconcile and plenty of time to learn about and from one another in the process.

Fox News' Rachel Campos-Duffy on Raising 8 Children in Today's 'Aggressive Political Environment'

Rachel Campos-Duffy may be a married mother of eight and a regular Fox News Channel contributor, but the TV personality is quick to admit that she “can’t do everything.”

“In terms of doing it all, I don’t do it all,” she tells PEOPLE.

“I think the advantage of having eight kids is that, first of all, it was harder for me when I had my first child. I think the first child is absolutely the hardest,” shares Campos-Duffy, 47, whose oldest and youngest share a 17-year age gap. “And a lot of times, first-time moms look at me and they’re like, ‘Oh my God.’ And I always remind them that my first child was the hardest, because it’s such a change.”

Today was Bishop Morlino’s funeral in Madison, Wisconsin. Sean attended along with Speaker Paul Ryan & Rep. Sensenbrenner. He baptized our daughter, Margarita, several years back. Here’s a short video clip from that wonderful day that shows his happy Italian spirit - smiling & enjoying our daughter’s antics during this holy sacrament. Then he came to our home to share a meal. It was an honor to know him. He spoke with faith, clarity & love. He will be sorely missed in Wisconsin & in the Church. Rest In Peace.

Rachel Campos-Duffy: "Christianity needs to offer a more robust, manly, not feminized version of Christianity"

Somehow, a recent Fox News discussion about the Islamic State's recruitment strategy veered into another equally urgent issue: the "feminized" church.

Rachel Campos-Duffy, best known for her stint on MTV's "The Real World: San Francisco," appeared on Tuesday's episode of Fox News’ “Outnumbered” to discuss the recent arrest of six people in Minneapolis and San Diego who were plotting to join the Islamic State.

Yet Campos-Duffy had another pressing topic on her mind. The real problem, she said, is that Christianity has become too "feminized," and it's Pope Francis's job to address it. "Christianity needs to offer a more robust, manly, not feminized version of Christianity," she argued. "It's a very interesting topic that I hope our pope will address when he comes to that joint session of Congress in September instead of climate change, which is what I understand he wants to talk about."

I missed this, a few weeks back the JS did a feature on Rachael Campos-Duffy.

Rachel Campos-Duffy may be more well-known nationally than in Wisconsin.

She laughs at that notion.

"That's OK with me," she said. "We lead public lives, but Sean and I are very private. We're home on Friday nights and don't do a lot of socializing. We want to be with our kids at home."

Sean is her husband, Republican U.S. Rep. Sean Duffy, who represents the state's sweeping rural, northwestern 7th Congressional District.

Campos-Duffy is a Latina, an outspoken Republican conservative and the mother of six. She's also a television personality, pundit, blogger, speaker and author of the book "Stay Home, Stay Happy: 10 Secrets to Loving At-Home Motherhood."

Last week, she was in New York to appear on NBC's "Today" show, where she discussed family and social media as part of a panel with three other women. She also appeared on a web show and attended meetings on various projects, she said.

She's made many appearances on TV's "The View." Twice she was considered for the "conservative" spot on the daily talk show.

She had a parenting blog for AOL and now contributes to the "Today" show blog - Moms.Today.com. She also contributes to the National Review Online, The American Spectator and Catholicvote.org. She has a manager, a hosting agency and a literary agent.

She was in Milwaukee on Saturday to speak at the Salute to Hispanic Women conference and luncheon in her role as a spokeswoman for the LIBRE Initiative, a national organization that advances economic empowerment in the nation's Hispanic community.

In her excellent blog, “Why I never should have had eight children”, Leila Miller gives a spot on depiction of both the scorn and the sainting mothers of big families face from a culture that is utterly confused by why any sane woman in an age of readily available birth control would put herself through such a needless ordeal.

There are the nosey environmentalists who disapprovingly count my carbon footprints as they spill out of my minivan at the mall. And how many times have well-intentioned friends asked me if I think it’s “fair” on the children I already have to have another baby? And yet, how many times have my husband and I looked at each other across the room, six pleading, whining, crying children between us, and wondered how we got here, what have we done, and what would social services think if they walked in at that moment.

Rachel Campos-Duffy's New Real World

Though Rachel Campos-Duffy began her career in the public eye on MTV's reality series "The Real World: San Francisco" in 1994, she admits the network and media in general have traveled down a troublesome road during the intervening years. "There is a war, especially on young girls," said the mother of six children during a recent interview on the Christopher Closeup radio show. "There is a cultural pattern that is basically removing girlhood and pushing these kids into adolescence at a rapid rate. What's interesting about having an 11-year-old girl is being able to compare the cultural forces I was dealing with versus now."

Currently a stay-at-home mom and parenting blogger who recently wrote the book Stay Home, Stay Happy: 10 Secrets to Loving At-Home Motherhood, Campos-Duffy certainly doesn't believe in isolating yourself from popular culture. In fact, she's a frequent guest host on the ABC series "The View" where she freely voices her Catholic, pro-life beliefs. She also looks for positive elements in media, citing as an example some strong pro-life moments on the MTV series "16 and Pregnant" and "Teen Mom." Campos-Duffy goes on to acknowledge that the program also has its down side because the featured teens "are basically shacking up in each other's homes in front of their parents."
