continue at Fox6MILWAUKEE -- Milwaukee police officers were honored Tuesday night, June 4 during the city's annual "Mass of Blessing for Law Enforcement" at the Basilica of St. Josaphat.

MPD suffered unimaginable heartbreak since the last blue Mass a year ago -- with three officers losing their lives in the line of duty. They were remembered, as those in attendance were uplifted.
"This is something else. It's my first time ever being here," said Officer Michael Bachmann.
"There's going to be good times and bad times in law enforcement, but we can't forget our faith and I believe in the power of prayer," said Milwaukee Police Chief Alfonso Morales.
The event brought together officers, their families and the community, standing side by side as Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki delivered prayers of unity, peace, and support.
"It is our law enforcement community that refuses to abandon hope, even for our most challenging community," said Listecki.

Bus shelter transformed into Catholic parish replica + other news
Two weeks ago, the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation announced a $7.5 million capital campaign. The gorgeous church, beloved for generations in Milwaukee and built to house 12,000 Polish parishioners, is in need of infrastructure repairs. You can read the history of the Basilica here. (The Foundation raises funds to support the ongoing restoration and maintenance for the church itself.)
To raise awareness about the fundraising campaign, the Basilica transformed a Milwaukee bus stop with replicas of artwork found in the Basilica. Milwaukee Journal Sentinel article on that here.
I finally had a chance to stop by the Basilica's bus stop -- pictures below. The bus stop roof is in the image of the Basilica's dome and the bus stop features stained glass window images and a pew.
The bus stop is pretty neat. Take a look if you're in the Milwaukee area.
PS Super happy to be blogging again... Glad Matt welcomed me back into the BC fold. I am now with the Wisconsin Institute for Law & Liberty -- WILL is a nonprofit public interest law firm. Professor John McAdams' lawsuit against Marquette University is perhaps one of WILL's most recent well-known cases.

JS: Basilica of St. Josaphat begins urgent repairs, $7.5 million campaign
More than a century ago, a thriving Polish church community had the ambition to build a church as beautiful as St. Peter's in Rome but the practical sense to make it out of the used parts of a Chicago post office.
The Basilica of St. Josaphat represents a quintessential Milwaukee story. Today, though, the landmark, one of the most architecturally significant churches in Wisconsin, is showing her age and in need of $7.5 million in repairs.
Some of the restoration work is quite urgent. Some masonry, particularly around the roof ledges, is crumbling. Scaffolding will be erected this week and some work will begin immediately.
The Rev. Michael Glastetter, the Basilica pastor, described the art and architecture of the church as a way to "experience the awesome presence of God" when he announced plans for the renovations during Sunday Mass.
"What we are doing right now is the Band-Aid, emergency work that can't wait for the fundraising to be done," said Susan Rabe, president and CEO of the St. Josaphat Basilica Foundation, adding that entire areas of the masonry have crumbled and fallen away.

St. Josaphat himself was and is controversial, in fact one of the most contentious saints I've ever read about.
In October 1623 [St.] Kuntsevych ordered the arrest of the last priest who was clandestinely holding Orthodox services at Vitebsk, where Kuntsevych had a residence. Enraged at this, some Orthodox townspeople(along with Lithuanian Protestants) lynched Kuntsevych on 12 November. Witnesses of the event described it as follows:And in retaliation
The ringing of cathedral bells and the bells of other churches spread. This was the signal and call to insurrection. From all sides of town masses of people – men, women, and children – gathered with stones and attacked the archbishop's residence. The masses attacked and injured the servants and assistants of the archbishop, and broke into the room where he was alone. One hit him on the head with a stick, another split it with an axe, and when Kuntsevych fell, they started beating him. They looted his house, dragged his body to the plaza, cursed him – even women and children. ... They dragged him naked through the streets of the city all the way to the hill overlooking the river Dvina. Finally, after tying stones to the dead body, they threw him into the Dvina at its deepest.
Kuntsevych's canonization process began in the interval of the January Uprising of 1863–1865 against the Russian Empire and was "understood in many circles, including Polish, Russian, and Ruthenian circles, as a papal gesture of moral support for the insurgent Poles." A Russophile Ruthenian newspaper, Slovo (uk), published several negative articles about Kuntsevych. This antagonism to his canonization "makes sense within the context of the Russophile hegemony in Ruthenian public opinion" and was seen as insult to Imperial Russia. The Russian government responded, in 1875, with further Russification and forced conversion of the Eastern Catholic Chełm Eparchy, the last Eastern Catholic eparchy in the Russian Empire.Yet,
After numerous miracles attributed to Kuntsevych were reported to Church officials, Pope Urban VIII appointed a commission in 1628, to inquire into his possible canonization, which examined 116 witnesses under oath. Josaphat's body was claimed to be incorrupt five years after his death. In 1637, a second commission investigated his life and, in 1643, Josaphat was beatified. He was canonized on June 29, 1867 by Pope Pius IX.As in many of these East/West matters, it's complicated and blood boils to this day on both sides.

As of today, it's the law, per
2015 Wisconsin Act 51:
Section 1. 86.19 (1g) of the statutes is created to read:
86.19 (1g) (a) Subject to par. (b), the department shall erect and maintain 2 directional signs along eastbound and westbound I 94 and 4 directional signs along the exit ramps that correspond to the signs along the main roadway in Milwaukee County for the Basilica of St. Josaphat.
(b) Upon receipt of sufficient contributions from interested parties, including any county, city, village, or town, to cover the costs of fabricating, erecting, and maintaining the signs specified in par. (a), the department shall erect and maintain the signs. No state funds, other than from the receipt of contributions under this paragraph, may be expended for the fabrication, erection, or maintenance of the signs.
Cardinal Vaughan Schola at St. Josaphat in Milwaukee June 27-28; free concert and Mass
The Schola Cantorum of The Cardinal Vaughan School in London will shortly be embarking on a tour to the USA, visiting Milwaukee, Cincinnati, Stamford CT and New York. The chapel in the crypt of the Basilica of Saint Josaphat houses some truly beautiful artwork. An encouraging restoration is currently underway, proving that not all modern-day renovations of Catholic churches are disasters. Check out some of the pictures I took.

Interested in a Gregorian chant choir?
Dear Parishioners and Friends,
We'd like to explore the possibility of starting a Gregorian chant choir to sing at Vespers and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament on Wednesday evenings. I would anticipate a brief rehearsal at 5 pm on Wednesdays, just before Vespers begins at 5:30. The choir would chant the antiphons of Vespers, and lead the congregation in singing the psalms and hymns.
