A group of concerned alumni, parents and associates are pushing for Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wis., to renew its commitment to Catholic identity after numerous scandals in recent years. The Louis Joliet Society exposes events at Marquette that endanger its Catholic identity, and the group hopes its efforts will spur change and renewal at the Jesuit institution.continue at Cardinal Newman Society
The Louis Joliet Society aims to “reignite a genuine reverence for the Catholic intellectual tradition the University was founded to advance, bring clarity to the concept of true Catholic identity and communicate why it is so critical that Marquette sustain this identity in our increasingly secular world,” said Mary Jarvis, a founding member of the group, in an interview with The Cardinal Newman Society.
The Newman Society has reported multiple issues and scandals at Marquette University over the years. A pro-abortion politician has been invited to speak, a radical theologian has been awarded honors by the University’s ethics society, and University-sponsored workshops and events have exposed students to questionable and immoral sexual content.
Last year, the University generated significant controversy with its suspension of political science professor John McAdams, who was censured by the administration for a post on his personal blog, Marquette Warrior. McAdams covered a situation wherein a Marquette student was purportedly prohibited from discussing same-sex marriage in an ethics class, because the class instructor claimed that such a topic would be “offensive” to homosexual students.
Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by word, or by our epistle. 2 Thes 2:15

The Crescat: Denied Communion on the Tongue at My Grandmother’s Funeral
This is just so awful. No, it's all the way in Virginia, but how can stuff like this still happen in 2015?
… I just had the absolute worst experience ever during mass, at my Abuela’s funeral no less. I wasn’t going to post about here but I feel I have a duty to warn you all. If you ever happen to find yourself visiting the Tidewater area of Virginia and need to go to mass… just drive right by St. Therese in Chesapeake. Simply make the sign of the cross and keep on driving. Don’t look back. Trust me.Read more: http://www.patheos.com/blogs/thecrescat/2015/03/denied-communion-on-the-tongue-at-my-grandmothers-funeral.html#ixzz3U5nvyDrV
But of course, feel free to completely ignore my advice if you like your tabernacle located near the church office, absolutely love ginormous burlap banners, and simply loathe kneelers. Perhaps you find it charming and personable that the Sign of Peace last twenty minutes long because the priest likes to walk around and shake everyone’s hand. How friendly, right?
Maybe those stodgy, formal processions aren’t your thing either and you like a little a warm up how-we-doing-this-morning routine before you get down to mass-y business.
But if sacrilege is your cup tea, boy oh boy, is this parish just for you – especially if you have complete and utter disrespect for the Eucharist and disdain for those disgusting “traddies” that like to receive on the tongue. I mean gross, right? Yeah, to hell with those people. Lets just be jerks to them at their grandmother’s funeral.
Cream City interview with former Marquette grad on the Catholic identity on campus
I recently spoke with a good friend who graduated from Marquette University. He wanted to share some personal reflections about his time as an undergraduate there. After all, Marquette is seen by many as the gold standard Catholic institution in Milwaukee, so does it measure up in terms of its fidelity to Church teaching? “John” is currently a doctor serving in the Navy. An extremely bright fellow, he offers some perceptive insights about the striking lack of a serious Catholic identity at the university.
I would love to send my kids to Marquette. They need a "Catholic Studies" program like St. Thomas. A ton of success there without having to change at an administration level. Let the Catholic ghettos grow!
Bishop Ricken: St. Norbert College and the Catholic vision of life
Bravo! My empahsis.
Yep, go read it. This is not just a home run, but a 450 foot walk off home run. God bless Bishop Ricken, please comment and write your support to him!
Several months ago, I received many letters, emails, calls and complaints about St. Norbert College’s invitation to Gloria Steinem to give a presentation on their campus. The reason for inviting her, I have been told by college leadership, is to assist them in the discussion of the history of the women’s movement, especially as it may be understood in the context of domestic violence. Domestic violence is becoming a huge problem and, according to research, is almost an epidemic in the United States. I agree that domestic violence is an extremely important topic.read it at The Compass
Many of you asked me if I knew of the invitation to Steinem or if I approved of the invitation. I want to let you know that not only did I not approve of such a decision, I did not know about it. As bishop, I have the responsibility to ensure the Catholic identity of the Catholic colleges in our diocese. Even though Gloria Steinem has appeared at St. Norbert College before my time as the bishop of this diocese, and acknowledging that she has appeared at other Catholic colleges and universities, I do not approve of the appearance of Gloria Steinem at St. Norbert College. I have conveyed my strong disapproval to the abbot, the president of the college and the chair of the Board of Trustees.
That St. Norbert College wants to look into the causes and contexts for a huge societal problem is laudable and needs consideration and attention by society and church. However, I find the invitation of Steinem to be quite mystifying. Given the historical escalation of domestic violence in the United States, and the fact that the “tried and true methods” of the past 40 years do not work, a question arises in my mind: why would St. Norbert, a Catholic college, invite someone who is such a high profile and well-known protagonist and activist of abortion rights to weigh in on the causes and contexts of a dramatic increase in domestic violence in the United States?
