The UW-Madison junior is one of the inaugural tenants of Lumen House, the unusual campus housing project undertaken by three Downtown Madison Catholic congregations. The merged congregations are together known as the Cathedral Parish.
The three-story apartment building, 142 W. Johnson St., was formerly Holy Redeemer Catholic School, which closed in 1965. It is adjacent to Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, one of the congregations in the Cathedral Parish.
The parish spent about $3.5 million to convert the school into student housing, said Monsignor Kevin Holmes, parish leader. There are 19 apartment units of varying sizes, with total space for about 65 people.
The project is an attempt by the parish to turn a property that was quickly deteriorating into one that both generates income and furthers its religious mission. So far, both goals seem to be panning out.

"We purchased a Latin Mass missal at my grandparents estate sale recently. Inside I found this Bulletin from St. Patrick's Church in Madison, WI - February 7th, 1965.You can click the image to make it larger.
"This was before the Novus Ordo (New Mass) came out. It is interesting to note the number of daily and Sunday Masses compared to today. Some of the comments on the bulletin also seem to be quite the zingers seeing as the new Mass was not out yet."
Remember the poem at the end was prior to the Novus Ordo being published in 1969, but I'm not sure how that makes sense considering the content. Ahh, Aristotle has educated me that there was a 1965 Transitional Missal, I was not aware.

Madison Cathedral seeks to turn school building into UW student housing
A large Downtown Madison Catholic church wants to convert a historic school building on its property into rental housing for college students, three years after a different housing proposal by the church hit snags and was abandoned.
The latest proposal by leaders of Holy Redeemer Catholic Church, 120 W. Johnson St., would turn the former Holy Redeemer School into apartments at an estimated cost of $4.2 million, according to Monsignor Kevin Holmes, Holy Redeemer's priest.
Some resistance to the idea already has surfaced among parishioners who want to keep the building for church use. It's unclear how widespread the opposition might be or whether it would jeopardize the project.

He comments that his birdfeeder at his new location does not get the spectacular array of visitors that he used to get–many chickadees, not a lot else. However, he shows every sign of being a happy priest.
Fr. Z appointed president of the Madison Tridentine Mass Society
I asked both Fr Eric Sternberg and Msgr Kevin Holmes, and they confirmed that it’s perfectly public that Fr John Zuhlsdorf has been appointed, by decree of diocesan Vicar General Msgr James Bartylla, as the new President of the Tridentine Mass Society of Madison. Fr Zuhlsdorf will celebrate the 7am Traditional Latin Mass (Missa Cantata – sung Mass – High Mass) next Sunday November 25 at Holy Redeemer Church, which is part of the Cathedral Parish downtown in Madison, WI, and located on W Johnson half a block north of State Street (click for Google Map). There will be a simple reception in the library downstairs, after Mass.
Come to Mass to worship God. Holy Redeemer Church is beautiful and the sung Latin Mass with its Gregorian Chant is transcendent. Stay if you can, to give Fr Z a warm welcome to Madison!! More than a few locals have long been regular readers or commenters on his popular blog. And warm and vigorous support of Bishop Morlino has long been a recurring theme on Fr Z’s blog, so he has long been especially much a friend of our diocese.
So 7 bells is a bit early coming from La Crosse, I wish I could make it. I have heard rumors that the group is looking for a more convenient time which could perhaps require a different location. .... I don't know where he resides, others do, I don't ask. Needless to say, I assume it is in the state if this is a weekly visit. Yes. We've. Got. Father. Z. But this goes to show that the Diocese of Madison is a leader nationally when it comes to liturgy. There are not too many Cathedral parishes out there offering the Extraordinary Form.

This past week we celebrated the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross. There is no shortage of crosses in our lives, and we pray for one another and lift one another up as we encounter those crosses. It is through those crosses, which some of you experience right now, that can come the Resurrection victory. On the Feast of the Triumph of the Cross, I had the opportunity to bless a new Way of the Cross path that has been created on the site of our once and future cathedral. As we look forward to the great day of the dedication of our new cathedral, some generous people have stepped forward and have created a prayer garden, with beautiful plantings and a path of paving stones which mark the sorrowful way of Our Lord’s suffering and death. We had beautiful weather for the blessing on the Feast of the Holy Cross, and a beautiful gathering of people to pray together. The stations, which are beautifully arranged, have been blessed and are there for our prayer, but one day there will be a very beautiful cathedral there.
It is necessary that we have a cathedral and that day will come. Our delay has a lot to do with our economy, but there cannot be a diocese without a cathedral. The Way of the Cross is a beautiful sign that the way we will get to a new cathedral in the same way that we get to every good thing; the way we get to every experience of resurrection, that is, the way of the cross.
The Feast Day of the Holy Cross is so very important to us because the cross is the sign of our salvation, the sign of Christ’s victory. As one of our young priests mentioned in his Mass on the feast day, there are many signs in our world, around which people rally — the Badgers have their big red and white “W,” and the Packers have their “G,” outlined in green and gold. These are easily identifiable ways of indicating the very “culture” that they embody.
