Photos from Rorate Mass at St. Paul's at University of Wisconsin

The Tridentine Mass Society was recently approached by Fr Andrew Showers, one of the priests at St Paul’s, the campus parish of the University of Wisconsin, requesting our assistance. The students were requesting a traditional Advent Rorate Mass, and they would need to borrow some liturgical items for proper celebration of the TLM in their beautiful new building.

NLM: A Beautiful Church Rebuilding in Madison, Wisconsin

From Matthew Alderman come these very nice photos of the Catholic Student Center at the Univ. of Madison, Wisconsin. Matthew himself designed the exterior at the aesthetic level (i.e. surface, not structure), the chapel architecture, the altarpiece surround, altar, and ambo; the interior decoration and color scheme were developed from his initial concept. Some specific elements of the final design, like the stencil work in the apse are also his; the renderings given below, which we reproduce with his permission via his studio’s Facebook page, give a good sense of his contributions. (The Architect of Record is RDG Planning and Design, and the church interior decoration is by EverGreene Architectural Arts.)

WisSJ: Shimmering St. Paul's mosaic a striking addition to campus end of State Street in Madison

The lede story when I checked this morning!
Even on an overcast fall afternoon, the nearly 300,000 tiles that make up the mosaic on the new Catholic student center at UW-Madison were shimmering as freshman Casey Gilinson walked by.

The two-story mosaic — like the new $30 million Saint Paul University Catholic Center itself, clad in brick and stone and topped by a copper dome — is a striking new addition at the most prominent gateway to UW-Madison, and stands out next to its drab, concrete campus neighbors.

“It’s colorful,” Gilinson said. “It’s nice to see on my way to class.”

New St. Paul's makes its way skyward on UW-Madison campus

The new St. Paul's front façade will draw the eye upward from the quintuplet arched entryway to a vibrant mosaic depicting the Coronation of Mary by her Son Jesus.

Inside the sanctuary of the church, a depiction of Jesus Pantocrator will fill the vaulted dome above the apse. In the reredos behind the tabernacle, a painting of Mary cradling the infant Jesus will recall Christ's humanity.

"An extraordinary level of attention has been given to creating transcendent, beautiful art throughout the new building and especially in the sanctuary. We are diligently working to raise all of the necessary funds and conclude the capital campaign in the coming months," said Senior Director of Advancement Scott Hackl.

A dozen interior mosaics running along both walls of the church will highlight 12 canonized saints, pillars of Catholicism, whose witness will speak to the minds and hearts of young people.

One Step Closer - St. Paul's New Building Coming Fall 2017

God's blessings to you and it is with tremendous enthusiasm that we share with you great news on the new building project at St. Paul Catholic Center. The Christ the Cornerstone campaign has been profoundly blessed by the many supporters who have joined together to raise over $24.5 million of the $26 million goal.

Over the past year, we have continued our fund raising efforts while working to enhance the design of the interior space for the new St. Paul's given the success of the campaign to-date and new construction well at hand.

As St. Paul's nears the completion of this historic campaign, a final $1.5 million must be raised in order to fund the enhancement of three remaining areas of great importance. These areas of focus will create a truly beautiful future for the Catholic ministry at UW-Madison, continuing St. Paul's tradition of enlivening and deepening the faith of college students to prepare them for a Christ-centered life.

WisSJ: Catholic student center on UW campus to hold final Mass Sunday before demolition

On Thursday morning, the Catholic student center at UW-Madison did not feel like a place about to be demolished.

A custodian vigorously vacuumed the sanctuary as other workers endured the laborious task of replacing burned-out light bulbs from fixtures that hang 28 feet above the altar.

The attention was in preparation for the final Mass on Sunday, which the Rev. Eric Nielsen, the center’s director, envisions as a loving farewell to an old friend.

“This building has served so many people so well for so many years,” Nielsen said. “We want it to go out in glory.”

Did WisSJ get a website overhaul?  I think it looks really good, and articles like this now can feature inline media which makes for a much better read.  This is another excellent article.

This weekend marks the 10th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina hitting New Orleans.

One of the deadliest hurricane's ever, Katrina left a trail of destruction in its wake--both literally and figuratively. Beyond the loss of life, the hurricane became the costliest natural disaster in U.S. history, with damage topping $100 billion. There was also a political price to be paid. Katrina effectively ended George W. Bush's presidency just seven months after he was inaugurated to his second term. A decade later, New Orleans still hasn't fully recovered from the hurricane. The city's population is down nearly 25 percent from before the storm.

Somehow, it's simultaneously hard to believe that it's already been ten years and that it's only been ten years. I haven't given the storm much--if any thought--in recent years. But the coverage of this week's anniversary takes me back.

When Hurricane Katrina made landfall, I was just days away from starting my senior year at the UW-Madison . The storm had already caused damage throughout the Caribbean and in Florida, but the question on everybody's mind that last week of August was whether Katrina would make a direct hit on New Orleans. When it became increasingly clear that it would, the world watched and waited to see how severe the impact would be on a city already situated below sea level.

When Katrina reached the Louisiana Coast, I spent most of the night glued to cable news coverage with my roommate Jay. As the storm drew near, it was amusing to watch reporters kill time or conduct interviews with stubborn, sometimes crazy residents who refused to leave town.

The amusement, of course, wouldn't last long. When the storm finally passed, daylight revealed that the city had suffered massive damage. The levees failed, and 80 percent of the Big Easy was under water. Countless houses were destroyed. Refugees scattered about the country found themselves without homes to which they could return.

And they were the lucky ones. Around 1,500 people who tried to ride out the storm didn't make it--their bodies strewn about the city.

UW St. Paul's Student Center exceeds $20 million mark in campaign for a new chapel and student center

UW St. Paul's receives $5 million donation from Milwaukee benefactor

With great jubilation and gratitude I am delighted to share that the Christ the Cornerstone Campaign to build the new St. Paul Chapel & Student Center just received a $5 million commitment from a Milwaukee area benefactor!

Such an astonishing gift brings the total raised to $17.58mm out of the$24mm campaign goal, just shy of 75% completed.

This continued campaign success displays the increasingly high level of commitment being invested and which is necessary for the future mission of St. Paul's at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. We need your support now more than ever! We are less than $6.5mm away from building a new Catholic chapel & student center on campus that will last well over 100 years to serve young people from all over the country and world.

Thank you for all of your support to get us to this point and now let us press forward with faith and confidence to finish this campaign and build a new home for thousands of students for generations to come.

UW St. Pauls raised $11 million in first year of campaign

It has been just over one year since the start of the Christ the Cornerstone Campaign and through the dedicated leadership and early support of many, St. Paul's is approaching $11 million raised!

Thank you to all who have supported this project - the success of this first year is a remarkable accomplishment.

Know that the investment of your time and financial support is deeply valuable to the future of keeping the Catholic faith alive and attractive to students at UW-Madison.

As we begin 2014 marching forward to our goal, we continue to receive major gifts of support. The leadership team is ready and fully engaged in all that this campaign demands to steward all of your support thus far and develop what is necessary to reach our goal.

Year two of the campaign has begun, and it is just as important as the first. Your support has guided us to a tremendous start to the campaign, and we are eager to work all the more closely with you as we build a once-in-a-lifetime Catholic project to be a light to many souls searching for Truth.
Onward we go, pray for us, and please keep supporting this mission!

St. Paul's Unveils New Chapel Design

"One of the things I'm most excited about is that there will be a small chapel just for quiet prayer. Having a place to come and reflect, even when there are large group gatherings going on in the big chapel, that's going to be such a grace."

Madtown: Helping university students see life in Jesus Christ

“Without St. Paul’s,” University of Wisconsin-Madison student Jamie Wheeler reflects, “without the guidance it offers . . . ” She pauses. Then she smiles. “We would be missing the Big Picture.”

Jamie is a chemistry Ph.D. student from Texas. Three years ago, she made the big move north to study at the University of Wisconsin.

The “Big Picture” Jamie refers to is, of course, life in Jesus Christ. Students like Jamie can’t even imagine what their years of formation as young adults would be like without the grounding they receive at St. Paul University Catholic Center.

Young adults coming out of the shelter of home and into a world-class campus like the University of Wisconsin face what too often becomes a subconscious decision to the Big Question: now that my parents aren’t around to drag me to Mass on Sunday, am I going to keep the faith or leave it behind?
