Mike McCarthy speech at the 2016 Green Bay Catholic Mens Conference still available online

I thought it worth reminding readers after the firing of the long time coach during the Packers 100 year anniversary season, that McCarthy was active in the community, including the Catholic community.  I don't know of any other NFL head coach who takes time in his offseason to talk to a bunch of Catholic men, but that's just what McCarthy did two years ago.  Most sane fans would still root for this guy wherever he lands.

If the video doesn't show up, it can be found here.  McCarthy starts at 6:25:31, I couldn't get the embed to start at that time.

Notable is McCarthy getting choked up right off the bat (perhaps from raw emotion from speaking openly about his faith) and later choked up trying to talk about the recent and untimely death of his brother.

Announced school closing hits close to home for Mike McCarthy

The closing and/or consolidation of parochial schools hit close to home for Greenfield native Mike McCarthy, head coach of the Green Bay Packers and a alumnus of St. Rosalia Academy, whose closure recently was announced by the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh. Similar to other Catholic-school closures in recent years, St. Rosalia suffered from declining enrollment and financial burdens, according to the diocese. Mr. McCarthy, who was at St. Rosalia for Mike McCarthy Day, had set up a foundation that over the past seven years provided $550,000 to the school and parish. His remarks underscore the lifelong connection to one's Catholic education.

“I'm extremely disappointed. I'm not going to point fingers. But this situation in Greenfield is very personal to me and my family. My family has four generations going through there.”

“When you lose something important, you just wish you would have had a chance to save it.”

“To be in this predicament is disappointing. I'm sick about it. When you feel like you are doing your part to keep things going, just like everything in life, you want to be communicated with and you want accountability. Something obviously didn't go right to be in this position. I'm just stating the obvious.”

Mike McCarthy admitted he was a bit nervous prior to speaking to 1,500 men at the 2016 “Men for All Seasons”

Even though he regularly speaks to men in his profession, Green Bay Packer coach Mike McCarthy admitted he was a bit nervous prior to speaking to about 1,500 men gathered for the 2016 “Men for All Seasons,” Green Bay Catholic men’s conference on March 5 at the KI Convention Center.

Talking about himself professionally is part of his job. Talking about himself personally presented a different challenge.

“He really worked hard on his talk,” said Green Bay Bishop David L. Ricken. “He’s nervous like I’m nervous when I throw out the pass (at the annual Bishop’s Charities Game).”

McCarthy incorporated humor in his presentation. He made an early note that Jesus (a crucifix was on stage) was looking over his shoulder.

“I knew he was going to be here, but I didn’t know that he was going to be right there,” he said, drawing laughs from the crowd.

Mike McCarthy talk at Green Bay Men's Conference available online

I tried to use starttime, but if it doesn't work, McCarthy starts at 6:25:31.  (yes, it's the whole conference in one video)

Father Jim Baraniak gives a nice intro, but then it gets pretty thick by the end.  Coach laughs it off once on stage.  Notable is McCarthy getting choked up right off the bat(perhaps from the glowing intro, or just raw emotion from speaking openly about his faith) and later choked up trying to talk about the recent and untimely death of his brother.  He is a very likable guy, had a great sense of humor, entertaining, and did provide some levels of insights.

I'll do a post with my thoughts on this and the whole conference later this week.

Getting the head coach of the Green Bay Packers is fantastic.  What a good man to take some of his preciously short off season to come to an event like this.  I hope the attendance is good.  Perhaps coach would also consider making a trip to Men of Christ in Milwaukee in the future.  You may remember Men of Christ had Joe Lombardi (Vince's grandson and Latin Mass goer) a few years ago.

I think I am going to attend this one, I have yet to register.

A nice looking upgrade to the Men of Christ website.  A solid lineup.  Jeff Cavins is fantastic.  Very timely to have Bishop Doeme.  An article from last year:

I reached out and I think that Madison is not hosting a Men's Conference this spring.

Packers head coach Mike McCarthy to headline men's conference in Green Bay March 5

Bishop David Zubik gives a blessing to Mike McCarthy,
head coach of the Green Bay Packers, at the conclusion
of the Oct. 20 program at St. Rosalia Academy.
Green Bay Packers coach Mike McCarthy will be among the keynote speakers for the “Men for All Seasons: A Men’s Spirituality Conference” on March 5 at Green Bay’s KI Convention Center, 333 Main St.

The conference is an extension of the A Day for Men program held at St. Norbert Abbey in De Pere in previous years. St. Norbert Abbey is hosting the conference in collaboration with the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay and Esto Vir. [A good thing]

The event will run from 7:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Men of all ages are invited to participate in a day of inspiration, education, challenge, community and prayer.

Is this then replacing the Esto Vir men's conference?  It appears so.

I would really like to go, I've got to go to Palo Alto for work though, not sure if I can swing it.

Packers coach talks pre-game prayer

What’s something you always tell your team before they go out on the field?

I’ve used a new routine over the last year and a half, having a player be the last person to speak to the team before a game. That’s been interesting. It was unusual at first, but there are good reasons why I did that. The last thing I say to the team is a prayer that highlights scripture from the Bible that’s representative of our theme for the week. After the Bible verse, we say the Lord’s prayer, and then I call one of the three captains up to speak to the team before we take the field. My last message to the team is actually Saturday night. That’s when I go through all the reminders, expectations for the game, and my thoughts on where we are and what we need to do.

ESPN: Mike McCarthy's Irish Catholic roots in Pittsburgh

McCathy at St Norbert's
He grew up in a neighborhood of winding hills and practical homes where people never leave, never think of it, because it's home. His mother and father were born here, in a blue-collar neighborhood called Greenfield, and that's where they've stayed for nearly seven decades. His Sundays were all about ritual: church, chores and a mass scramble to finish everything by 1 o'clock because that's when the Steelers played.

If you want to know why Mike McCarthy pulled overnighters back in his days as an NFL assistant in Kansas City, why he offered to work for free in his first coaching job, the answers are found with [his father] Joe. He's a no-nonsense Irish Catholic man who taught his five kids to be independent. To make their own way.

St. Rosalia, which is located, of course, on Greenfield Avenue, resembles a time capsule sealed off in 1973. There is green tile on the walls and a whiff of old books in the air. Children file out of school in uniforms, obediently and in order, just like their parents did.

McCarthy's high school, Bishop Boyle, shuttered in 1987. So this is the coach's one true remaining alma mater in Pittsburgh. He comes back occasionally and can be seen at church with his parents. When the Packers made him their head coach in 2006, he didn't forget St. Rosalia. He had an annual donation to the school drafted into his contract, with an agreement that the Packers would match his pledge.

The gift has helped the school, which has seen enrollment numbers plummet from 600 students during McCarthy's days to 175, stay afloat. For Dara Pegher, it's helped her family. Pegher graduated from St. Rosalia and says the coach's donation made her daughter's tuition bill more affordable. That's what most of McCarthy's gift went to, helping parents send their kids to the school he loves.

On Monday, Pegher, the parent-teachers guild president, stood in the entrance of St. Rosalia, near a picture of McCarthy. She was approached by a priest who joked and asked what color she'd be wearing to mass on Sunday: green or black?

Green, Pegher said.

"You know what? When that game started," Pegher said, "I had tears in my eyes. Because he has worked so hard. And what he's done for this school is a gift unlike any other gift.

"Prayers were answered."
The whole thing is a great read on ESPN.com

McCarthy is a daily Mass goer, like Vince Lombardi was.  The Compass is planning on having some Packer coverage for their Feb 4th issue.  I'll be interested to see what they have in store.
