3,000 attend Men of Christ in Milwaukee

It was a gorgeous blue sky, sun-splashed Saturday morning, the kind where one might expect that anybody and everybody would be outdoors. What’s not to love on a day off like this? Such a golden opportunity to cherish a beautiful, warm spring day as Wisconsin finally loosens its icy winter grip.

But, for some 3,000 Catholic men from all across Wisconsin and more than a dozen other states, Saturday, April 1 offered a very different kind of warmth indoors. It featured a special brand of camaraderie that even Mother Nature couldn’t provide.

This was the 10th annual Men of Christ Conference at the Milwaukee Theatre downtown, and it drew the largest crowd in conference history. Attendees gathered to re-connect with God while enjoying the support of other like-minded men seeking to strengthen their spiritual walk while becoming better family men and citizens in their communities. The theme for the event was “Obedience Amid the Rebellion.” Confessions were heard throughout the day and many took encouragement from the long lines of men waiting to take the sacrament. There were dynamic, inspirational speakers and an urgent plea for young men to consider the priesthood as a vocation. Archbishop Jerome Listecki celebrated Mass to conclude the day’s activities.

Bishop of Boko Haram Ravaged Diocese Coming to Milwaukee Saturday

Bishop Oliver Dashe Doeme of Maiduguri, Nigeria — the epicenter of Boko Haram’s violent campaign — is coming to Milwaukee. The Bishop is coming as a guest of Men of Christ, a  local Catholic lay apostolate, to speak at its 10th annual men’s conference, March 12, 2016 at the Milwaukee Theater. He will also be speaking at a number of other venues in Milwaukee and Madison including an address to  Archdiocesan priests and deacons and a meeting with Archbishop Listecki.

Bishop Doeme will be sharing his message of faith, forgiveness, the power of the Rosary and Marian devotion.  His witness is particularly poignant as he oversees a diocese that has been ravaged by Islamic extremist group  Boko Haram for fourteen years. According to Bishop Doeme, when he was made bishop in 2009, his diocese of  Maiduguri was home to roughly 125,000 Catholics. Today, with escalating Boko Haram violence, only 60,000 remain. Boko Haram was founded in Maiduguri in 2002. In 2014, the group achieved global infamy when it kidnapped 276 school girls. Later, Boko Haram leader Abubakar Shekau declared that “this is a war against  Christianity and democracy.” In March of 2015, they allied with ISIS. Boko Haram’s horrific attacks have left  thousands dead and displaced. According to the Diocese of Maiduguri, many of the displaced include widows,  orphans, catechists and priests who are in urgent need of material and medical assistance. Many others have fled  to the neighboring nation of Cameroon. Churches and rectories throughout the diocese have been heavily  damaged, and more than three hundred ecclesial structures are in need of rebuilding.

Through it all, Bishop Doeme has remained a faithful and joyful shepherd to his people. Late in 2014, while  praying in Adoration, he had a vision of Christ in which Our Lord handed him a sword. As the bishop took the sword, it turned into a Rosary, and he heard Christ say three times, “Boko Haram is gone.” Bishop Doeme has  since been sharing his story and inspiring message around the world. “Prayer, particularly the prayer of the  Rosary, is what will deliver us from the claws of this demon, the demon of terrorism,” he said in an interview with  Catholic News Agency. “And of course, it is working.”

Kevin O’Brien, president of Men of Christ, said that when he learned of Bishop Doeme’s story, he invited him to  speak at this year’s conference. “I was thrilled when he accepted,” said O’Brien. “I think it’s so important for all of  us here, and men in particular, to see this kind of faith and devotion in the face of seemingly overwhelming evil. This will be a very powerful experience.”

Getting the head coach of the Green Bay Packers is fantastic.  What a good man to take some of his preciously short off season to come to an event like this.  I hope the attendance is good.  Perhaps coach would also consider making a trip to Men of Christ in Milwaukee in the future.  You may remember Men of Christ had Joe Lombardi (Vince's grandson and Latin Mass goer) a few years ago.

I think I am going to attend this one, I have yet to register.

Flanked by candle-bearing acolytes, the priest held the monstrance aloft and processed through the aisles of the massive Milwaukee Theatre. More than 2,500 men were on their knees in adoration as the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ passed before them, bedecked in gold. The solemn Eucharistic procession was the culmination of the ninth annual Men of Christ conference: a day of prayer, speakers, reflection, and Mass. In the halls outside the theater, the line for confession was 200 deep much of the day, even with more than 75 priests hearing confessions. Men waited an hour or more to confess their sins and be forgiven. For some, it was their first confession in years, even decades.

On a Saturday when the highly ranked Wisconsin Badgers were playing tournament basketball on television, a small city of Catholic men instead* gathered in downtown Milwaukee to get closer to Christ. From ages 8 to 90, they filled the sprawling, ornate theater for more than eight hours of Catholic enrichment. The chorus of deep, resonant voices seemed to lift the roof during the Lord’s Prayer. Extended applause greeted Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki when he announced his support for concealed carry — then pulled out a Rosary as his weapon of choice. It seemed every man in the audience had one.

What’s going on here? The leaders of this emergent movement say the goal of events like this is nothing less than complete restoration of the Catholic man. Think “band of brothers” over pockets of loners; would be-martyrs instead of has-been quitters. Virtue and service over vice, sin, and addiction. Every Catholic Caspar Milquetoast is being called to emulate Don John of Austria, who with the Holy League saved Christendom from the Ottoman Turks. Yesterday’s average Joe is being remolded as priest, prophet, and king—a bold and self-sacrificing leader in the model of Jesus and St. Joseph. The call has gone out: real Catholic men wanted. Rosary-praying, faith-defending spiritual warriors. Education and training will be provided.

“Men need support and friendship of other Catholic men,” said Steve Ray, Catholic author, apologist, and creator of the Footprints of God documentary series. “We’re in a war, and men are starting to realize it. Life is getting tougher. We can no longer consider ourselves part of the flow of American culture.” Ray, who has spoken at the Men of Christ conference, said the timing is right for men to reclaim their Catholic faith and be prepared to defend it.

John Pridmore is really good, I think he was a speaker the first year I went. ... Meh... Fr. Larry, well, alot of people like him on Relevant Radio...  I haven't heard Devin Schadt before, but he's(new?) from Catholic Answers.  Regardless of speakers though, 3,000+ Catholic men together for a day conference is pretty powerful stuff!  90+ priests hearing Confessions!!

I'm trying to decide which conference to go to this year.  Lent is only a month away!   Madison is probably more in my wheelhouse.  I haven't yet been to Esto Vir in Green Bay/Appleton yet, and I'd really like to make the trip one of these years.  It has been a few years since I went to Men of Christ and I do miss Milwaukee(really).  Day trips for Brewers games just don't suffice.  I need to go kiss my basilica, it's been too long.

Men of Christ: We vote for life, marriage, and families

Tomorrow is a call to arms, a call to duty as Men of Christ. Brothers, tomorrow we must vote a well-formed Catholic conscience for the sake of the country, our communities, our church and our families.

We vote for life, from conception through natural death.

We vote for marriage between one man and one woman.

We vote for our families, that government will serve us—not the other way around.

Tomorrow must be the day we start to take our country back to the principles of our Founding Fathers, and the men and women who have fought and died to preserve them. Gentlemen, get battle-ready, and vote your well-formed Catholic conscience tomorrow!

The last conference I attended in Milwaukee they said that it was the largest Catholic men's conference in the US; they get over 3,000 guys. 

I did posts somewhere on my previous visits.  Not this year, baby due right about that day.  *sigh*  I miss Milwaukee.  It's been too long.

Joe Lombardi speaks at Men of Christ conference in Milwaukee

There aren’t many names in the sports world that are considered almost royalty, but the Lombardi name holds special meaning in Wisconsin.

On March 9 at the Men of Christ conference, New Orleans Saints quarterback coach Joe Lombardi, grandson of legendary Green Bay Packers coach Vince Lombardi, spoke to a crowd of men some old enough to remember his grandfather.

“The Lombardi family, there’s always going to be a part of us, a part of our hearts here in Wisconsin, so every year I do love coming back to this state,” Lombardi said.

Like his grandfather, Lombardi is a devout Catholic and a member of Our Lady of the Lake Parish, Mandeville, La.

“Getting up and sharing my faith is not something that comes naturally to me; it’s not something that I’m very comfortable with,” Lombardi said.

Walking out on stage at the Milwaukee Theater while a piano played, “When the Saints Go Marching In,” [CORNY!!] Lombardi told stories about his grandfather and his faith.

“His faith was very important,” Lombardi said, adding his grandfather spent three years in the seminary. “He went to Mass every day and received the Eucharist. And Bart Starr would tell you if you heard him every afternoon at practice, you’d understood why he had to go to Mass everyday.” [LOL, but very true!]

To be honest I'm a little disappointed in the lineup.  Also the opening Mass used to be in the Extraordinary Form and now they turned the table on that.  But I may go just for the Joe Lombardi talk.  Joe is the grandson of legendary coach Vince Lombardi and currently quarterbacks coach for the New Orleans Saints.  The fact a man in his position is willing to spend time talking about his faith is a testament to those running Men of Christ to get him on the ticket.  Plus I love making a trip to Milwaukee every year just for Catholic stuff. 

3½ Time-Outs Tuesday

So That Michigan Maniac aka LarryD has started this "meme" of which I am participating, although I'm not sure why.  I have to speak incoherently to 3.5 topics. 

1.  We are expecting baby number 4 on our wedding anniversary.  On our wedding day, it rained 12 inches(that's right, a foot of rain) in La Crosse.  Some people couldn't get home because most highways were closed that night.  Considering the ...excitement... with our last try at this, we're still hoping for a more peaceful experience this time around. 

2. We just got a Kindle Fire last night.  They had The Autobiography of Saint Therese of Lisieux: The Story of a Soul for free to download.  I put down The Last Crusade (a must read) and started reading it last night. 

3.  LoyolaPress posted this: "Eight Jesuit Schools in the Big Dance--who are you rooting for? http://ow.ly/9Bo5t".  Would it be uncharitable to reply "Ex Corde Ecclesiae"?  I try not to, but I usually root for Marquette.  Mea culpa.  I don't think LarryD follows college basketball closely; Michigan State has pounded the Badgers three times this year and there's almost no trash talk.... maybe it's a penitential thing.

Men of Christ in Milwaukee this Saturday

There's still time to register, even Saturday morning. It starts with a Traditional Latin Mass at 7 am. I'm hoping to make it early but I'm driving in from Holy Hill. Tomorrow I'll be out of the "office" all day with my camera in Milwaukee. Looking forward to that. Having a meeting with the mayor Tom Barrett to discuss succession of Milwaukee and proclaiming Archduke Rudolf of Austria King of Milwaukee. I'm afraid the only thing Barrett will be ready to profess is his love for Planned Parenthood.

Oh and I guess fantastically Virginia and I are meeting up at Mo's Irish Pub in Wauwatosa Friday evening.  We will be conspiring against "the man."  I'm hoping my window doesn't fall out of my car like last year.  If you are a fanatic, come join the fun.

I went to Men of Christ last year in Milwaukee and I'm going again this year.  The Milwaukee Theater is a great venue and the speaker lineup looks great yet again.  The people who run this do a really good job.  I'm hoping to come a day earlier, stop at Holy Hill, the Basilica, and maybe a few other stops if there is time.  If anyone else is interested in carpooling from La Crosse, let me know.  So far there are two of us.  Maybe go down to the Safe House for a few drinks?  Okay, maybe somewhere else then..

The other conferences do look good as well.  Nice to see Minneapolis bring in Matthew Kelly this year.  I'm not sure if I could make it up for that one as well, but I think it would be worth the trip.
