‘Theology on Tap’ at Schmitty’s Bar in Fond du Lac
continue at Fond du Lac ReporterSinger Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk” blared from the speakers of Schmitty’s Oar House Bar and Grill in Fond du Lac while a group of approximately 30 young adults bowed their heads in an opening prayer.
“Theology on Tap” is a summer speaker series hosted by the Holy Family Catholic Community every Tuesday night in July, and your first drink is on the church.
A local pub may not be a typical meeting place for a Catholic youth group, but Ashley Hietpas, coordinator of the event, said the casual environment is less intimidating for newcomers.
“It’s a little less formal to have the event at a bar and grill,” Hietpas said. “It’s easier to invite friends to come have snacks and a drink with you than to say, ‘Hey, let’s go to church together.’”
Three years ago, leaders at Holy Family heard about “Theology on Tap” events held by the Archdiocese of Milwaukee and decided to bring the program to Fond du Lac, according to Hietpas.

Theology on Tap, offering an opportunity to discuss faith issues with friends in a relaxed setting, is coordinated in the Diocese of Peoria by the Office of Evangelization and Family Life. The gatherings begin at 6:30 p.m. with the talks starting at 7.
The Peoria series opened June 4 with a talk on “Spirit-Filled Evangelizers” by Sister Clara Maria Malay, SCTJM, who serves at the St. John Paul II Catholic Newman Center in Bloomington-Normal.

This last Tuesday, Chris also presented at Theology on Tap in La Crosse. He really did a fantastic job. We had probably 20-25 people come. As you can imagine, he's giving several talks a week and it really made me appreciate all the work he's been putting in leading up to Advent. ... I also realized that people my age do not think like me... or at least these ones didn't. Someone was actually arguing(and laying it on pretty thick) that pro multis should not be translated "for many" but that translating it that way was Calvinistic. *sigh* Chris was much more patient that I could have been. Without getting into too many details, does this young man really think that the whole Church up until now actually was filled with a bunch of idiots who really couldn't figure out how to liturgically express this mystery? It is so hard for me to communicate with modernists who basically disregard all of Church history in coming to a conclusion. There are several reasons why pro multis is used. Aquinas said in the Summa that "the many" was referring either to the elect among the Gentiles or to those for whom Mass is offered. Yes Jesus died for all, even sinners who reject him, but the Mass isn't just an anti-Calvinism high five. There is depth here that should be explored prior to a wagging of the finger.
"He was offered but once to bear the sins of many. Why does he [St. Paul] say, 'of many,' and not 'of all?' Because not all had faith. Although He died for all, as far as He is concerned, to save all, His death voiding the downfall of mankind, yet He did not take away the sins of all, because they themselves did not want Him to do this." - St. John Chrysostom, exegesis for Hebrews 9:28
Alright I really didn't mean to rant beyond the fact that *gasp* people actually had thought of some of these things prior to the 1970s.

Let me just say that it might take a whole lot of beer to sit through some of these talks.
Which reminds me, we had a pretty good turnout for La Crosse's Theology on Tap on Tuesday night. But, uhh, at one point our good priest seemed to be supporting von Balthazar's error that it is possible that no one is in hell, including Judas. Von Balthazar's theory seems to contradict Augustine and Aquinas, not to mention Christ himself. I suppose maybe there is a fear that youngsters would be offended by a teaching as heavy hitting as hell. But the Church has been one place that still supports the doctrine of free will. God doesn't force salvation on anyone, which the theory would seem to conclude. But I digress....
Theology on Tap in La Crosse next week
Mark your blackberry now as Father Jesse Burish will be offering Theology on Tap for young adults (20s & 30s) from 5:30 to 7:00 pm, with refreshments and soft drinks at Blessed Sacrament Parish Center (130 Losey Boulevard South). On Tuesday, June 14, the topics will be: “Is Ghandi in Heaven? Is There Salvation outside the Church?” On Tuesday, June 28: “What Happens after I Die: Judgment, Heaven, Hell?” Topics for the July 26, August 9 and August 23 Theology on Tap will be announced at a later time. These gatherings will surely be a shot in the arm! There will be time for questions and answers as well as time for fellowship sharing.Blessed Sacrament has a nice parish center although if you want to order your own drink, it might have to be sacramental wine. Seriously though, I'll be there. I'm not sure what will be on "tap" yet.
