Peoria IL Cathedral to celebrate beautiful new renovation with TLM August 24th

The beautiful restoration work is nearly complete at St Mary's Cathedral in Peoria, IL (photos on their Facebook). To celebrate the completion of this work and in honor of the 100th anniversary of the death of the first bishop of the Diocese of Peoria, two special Masses are schedule:

1) On Wednesday, August 24 at 7:15pm a Solemn Requiem Mass will be offered in the Extraordinary Form of the Roman Rite at the Cathedral in commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the Death of Archbishop Spalding

2) On Thursday, August 25 at 1pm a Solemn Mass of Founder’s Day will be celebrated by Bishop Daniel Jenky in the Cathedral.

Sheen Cause Suspended, Call for Prayer

It is with immense sadness that the Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, Bishop of Peoria and President of the Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation, announced today that the Cause for Sheen’s beatification and canonization has for the foreseeable future been suspended. The process to verify a possible miracle attributed to Sheen had been going extremely well, and only awaited a vote of the Cardinals and the approval of the Holy Father. There was every indication that a possible date for beatification in Peoria would have been scheduled for as early as the coming year. The Holy See expected that the remains of Venerable Sheen would be moved to Peoria where official inspection would be made and first class relics be taken. Subsequently, the Archdiocese of New York denied Bishop Jenky’s request to move the body to Peoria. After further discussion with Rome, it was decided that the Sheen Cause would now have to be relegated to the Congregation’s historic archive.

Countless supporters especially from the local church in Central Illinois have given their time, treasure and talent for this good work with the clear understanding that the body of Venerable Sheen would return to the Diocese. Bishop Jenky was personally assured on several occasions by the Archdiocese of New York that the transfer of the body would take place at the appropriate time. New York’s change of mind took place as the work on behalf of the Cause had reached a significant stage.

Bishop Jenky is what is technically called the “actor” of the Sheen Cause. The Diocese of Peoria and the Sheen Foundation have prayed and labored for this good work for the last twelve years. The Bishop is heartbroken not only for his flock in Peoria but also for the many supporters of the Sheen Cause from throughout the world who have so generously supported Peoria’s efforts. It should be noted, however, that saints are always made by God not by man. Efforts for many causes have sometimes taken decades or even centuries. Bishop Jenky urges that those who support the Sheen Cause continue their prayers that God’s will be made manifest.

No further comment will be released at this time.

A “Stump the Bishop” night on June 18 featuring Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, highlights a Theology on Tap series for Catholic young adults underway on Wednesdays in the month of June at Kelleher’s Irish Pub, 619 S.W. Water St. in Peoria.

Theology on Tap, offering an opportunity to discuss faith issues with friends in a relaxed setting, is coordinated in the Diocese of Peoria by the Office of Evangelization and Family Life. The gatherings begin at 6:30 p.m. with the talks starting at 7.

The Peoria series opened June 4 with a talk on “Spirit-Filled Evangelizers” by Sister Clara Maria Malay, SCTJM, who serves at the St. John Paul II Catholic Newman Center in Bloomington-Normal.

Archbishop Fulton Sheen miracle approved by Cause of Saints

Peoria, IL — The Most Reverend Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, Bishop of Peoria and President of the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Foundation, received word early Thursday morning that the 7-member board of medical experts who advise the Congregation for the Causes of the Saints at the Vatican unanimously approved a reported miracle attributed to the intercession of the Venerable Servant of God Archbishop Fulton Sheen.

The case involved a still born baby born in September 2010. For over an hour the child demonstrated no signs of life as medical professionals attempted every possible life saving procedure, while the child’s parents and loved ones began immediately to seek the intercession of Fulton Sheen. After 61 minutes the baby was restored to full life and made a full recovery. The child, now three years old, continues in good health.

Today’s decision affirms that the team of Vatican medical experts can find no natural explanation for the child’s healing. The case will next be reviewed by a board of theologians. With their approval the case could move on to the cardinals and bishops who advise the Pope on these matters. Finally, the miracle would be presented to Pope Francis who would then officially affirm that God performed a miracle through the intercession of Fulton Sheen. There is no timeline as to when these next steps might move forward.

“Today is a significant step in the Cause for the Beatification and Canonization of our beloved Fulton Sheen, a priest of Peoria and a Son of the Heartland who went on to change the world. There are many more steps ahead and more prayers are needed. But today is a good reason to rejoice,” commented Bishop Jenky.

Stanley Deptula, Executive Director gave His Eminence Raymond Leo Cardinal Burke, Prefect of the Apostolic Signatura, a tour of the Archbishop Fulton Sheen Museum here in Peoria, Illinois. Cardinal Burke has a devotion to Archbishop Fulton Sheen and was happy to see all that the Catholic Diocese of Peoria is doing for the Cause for Sheen's Canonization and said he was impressed by the museum.

Bishop Jenky leads rosary at Peoria abortion clinic

October is Respect Life Month. Last night, Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, CSC, led about 60 people in praying the rosary on the sidewalk in front of National Health Care Inc., 7405 N. University, Peoria, where abortions are performed. The prayer was in conjunction with 40 Days for Life, which is under way in Peoria, Champaign, Ottawa and the Quad Cities. Jesus taught that our temporal choices have eternal consequences. Jesus revealed there is not only an everlasting heaven but there is an everlasting hell. Today’s popular, liberal Christianity tends to beige all of that over. The God of our liberal therapeutic culture is usually presented as only a benign kind of higher force. This concept of God is almost like a tolerant psychiatrist, who for $400 an hour will patiently listen to absolutely everything we may have to say. There is no right or wrong, no judgment and certainly no punishment for deliberate sin. All the challenging and disturbing rough edges revealed in the Holy Scriptures are simply ignored or polished away. A tame, almost domesticated God, without any real power or authority is invoked mostly for comfort and to ritualize our happy and sad occasions. It’s nice to have a God something like Santa Claus invited to our baptisms, our marriages, our anniversaries and even our funerals. But the one true God, revealed throughout the bible, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, is certainly a God both mercy and of judgment. The living God demands our obedience and insists that we love and serve Him with our whole heart, mind, strength and soul, and insists that we love our neighbor as ourselves. God’s commandments are not optional. The law of God is not a suggestion. Sin is always a sham, a lie. Sin promises so much but delivers so little. And without any recognition of our sins there can be no experience of God’s grace.

Why is your bishop ranting and raving about hell fire and damnation? The short answer is I have no choice. We do not choose the scripture readings for Sunday’s. The Church chooses them for us and for our good. In the course of three years of appointed readings we will hear the whole Gospel. Not just words of comfort and joy, but also words of awe and trembling. I, like all priests was ordained to preach Jesus Christ in season and out of season. Not only his reassuring words but also His hard sayings, even His saying that if we do not repent in time in eternity we may find ourselves locked outside and hear the terrible words of judgment, I do not know you. Knowledge of Christ without any recognition of our need of Him only leads to loss. Just as knowledge of our need without any experience of Christ only leads to despair.

Wow, home run.  Bp. Jenky is excellent and definitely one of those new evangelization bishops, he's on Blogger, Facebook and Twitter.

Bp Jenky of Peoria, Ill. instates St. Michael Prayer in response to HHS persecution

Bishop Daniel Jenky of Peoria, Ill. has asked parishes, schools, hospitals and religious houses to insert the Prayer to St. Michael the Archangel into the intercessions at Sunday Mass to pray for Catholics’ freedom.

The move comes in response to a new federal requirement that will force many Catholic organizations to provide insurance coverage for sterilizations and contraceptives.

“It is God’s invincible Archangel who commands the heavenly host, and it is the enemies of God who will ultimately be defeated,” the bishop said in a Jan. 24 letter to the Catholics of his diocese.

The prayer should take place in the general intercessions before the concluding prayer, Bishop Jenky said. He asked that the intention of the prayer be announced as “for the freedom of the Catholic Church in America.”

The St. Michael prayer was authored by Pope Leo XIII, and was once commonly said in U.S. Catholic parishes as part of a petition for the freedom of Soviet Russia.

He said it is his duty to summon the local Church into “spiritual and temporal combat in defense of Catholic Christianity.”

“If these regulations are put into effect, they could close down every Catholic school, hospital and the other public ministries of our Church, which is perhaps their underlying intention,” Bishop Jenky said. “What is perfectly clear is that this is a bigoted and blanket attack on the First Amendment rights of every Catholic believer.”
