After 23 years in radio, Charlie Sykes announces retirement, says not due to rise of Trumpism

No, this is not good bye. I intend to continue to be an active and independent voice. But I just won’t be setting the alarm at 4:15 a.m. every morning.

This morning, I announced that I am stepping down from my daily radio show on WTMJ at the end of this year:

“It has been both a pleasure and honor to work here,” said Sykes. “It has been an extraordinary privilege to be a part of the momentous changes that have taken place in Wisconsin over the last two decades. This is not a decision that I made either lightly or recently and it was not driven by this year’s political season. I made this decision more than a year ago for both professional and very personal reasons. My father died when he was 63, and I will turn 62 this year, so this year has always been circled on my calendar. Frankly, if I was ever going to make a move, it was now. While I am stepping back from my daily radio duties I intend to remain an active voice. I want to write more, travel more and pursue new opportunities.”

I know that lot of people will assume that my decision has something to do with this current campaign and the rise of Trumpism. But, the reality (as my friends and family know) is that I made this decision a long time ago. Twenty-three years is a long time to do a radio show and most hosts don’t get to go out on their own terms. So I’m lucky to have had that chance.

Officer shot in 'vicious' attack on Milwaukee's south side

MILWAUKEE —A Milwaukee police officer was shot multiple times early Sunday as he sat in his squad car while colleagues investigated a domestic disturbance call, an official said.

The suspected shooter, identified by police as a 20-year-old West Allis man with two felonies on his record, was found dead in a nearby yard, they said.

The incident began as a response to a domestic disturbance call near South 17th Street and West Morgan Avenue at about 2 a.m. During that investigation, an officer was "attacked viciously" by someone who fired shots into his squad car, striking the officer multiple times," Asst. Police Chief William Jessup said in a morning press conference.
"It was tense, and they handled it well," Hansen said. "Absolutely, I want to thank the police for putting their lives on the line for us and being out there and protecting us each and everyday."
Police commanders have since instructed all Milwaukee officers to respond to calls in two-person squads until further notice.

Pope Francis visits with parents of slain Wisconsin student

He was the luckiest kid in the world.

That's how the family of Beau Solomon felt just over a decade ago, when the young boy from Spring Green got to meet legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Brett Favre through the Make-A-Wish program.

Solomon went on to survive a 10-year battle with a rare form of cancer, and became a leader on and off the football field. He graduated with high honors from River Valley High School while playing three sports all four years, and was involved in student council and other activities.

Antigo churches pray for prom shooting victims

ANTIGO — Antigo’s churches and schools are reaching out to students and parishioners following an April 23 shooting at a high school prom.

Jakob Wagner, 18, shot two people outside of the Antigo High School prom Saturday evening before being shot and killed by an Antigo police officer on a routine patrol of the parking lots surrounding the facility. Wagner was a 2015 graduate of Antigo High School.

Physically, the victims’ injuries are not life-threatening. The male was shot in the leg and is recovering after what his parents said in a statement was a “long surgery.” His prom date was grazed in the thigh. She was treated and released from Aspirus Langlade Hospital in Antigo. Neither victim has been identified.

Emotionally, the toll may be much higher.

Here’s the Story of Four-Year-Old Wisconsin boy at SOTU

Source
When Speaker Ryan was deciding who he should invite as his State of the Union guests, a certain four-year-old boy from Milton, WI, came to mind. The boy’s name is Logan Barritt, and he certainly has a story to tell.

It all began when Logan’s grandfather gave him a handful of pocket change, which he was going to add to his piggy bank. If you or I were given a lump of change, we probably wouldn’t think twice of what we could do with it—if anything, maybe gripe about having to carry it around. Yet when Logan’s mother asked him this very question, Logan had much bigger plans.

“I want to give it to the soldiers,” said Logan, who was raised on the stories of his Uncle Craig, a veteran Marine. Their jobs didn’t seem very “fun,” Logan explained, and he wanted to change that.

Logan’s parents posted a call for donations on their Facebook pages. The result? Enough money to send 17 care packages to Americans serving overseas for Christmas, complete with Pez dispensers. -

Lawyer connected to Shawano cult has WI law license suspended for anti-Catholic tirade against judges

A lawyer and corporate manager for a controversial religious sect based near Shawano has been barred from practicing law in Wisconsin for a year, in part for publicly smearing federal court officers as "a bunch of ignoramus, bigoted Catholic beasts that carry the sword of the church."

Naomi Isaacson was a lawyer and CEO of the Dr. R.C. Samanta Roy Institute of Science and Technology. The religious sect known as "SIST," based in Wescott, made news in 2008 for having allegedly compiled a list of 60 Shawano area residents that were "potential victims of an implied threat," according to Shawano police.

The institute, which also has been identified as The Disciples of the Lord Jesus, has operated since the 1970s in the Shawano area, where it owned motels, gas stations and a go-cart track. The FBI in 2009 investigated the "implied threat" list, but no charges were brought.

Isaacson had her law license suspended this week for conduct that "displayed an utter disregard and disrespect for the integrity of the courts and their judges in a brazen and outrageous fashion," according to the Wisconsin Supreme Court's Office of Lawyer Regulation.

In some of the court actions in which she was involved, Isaacson called Shawano a "Neo-Nazi territory" and accused former Mayor Lorna Marquardt of having undue influence on the local and federal court systems, court records say. Marquardt was reportedly one of the 60 people on the 2008 "implied threat" list.

It's been a while but this does ring a bell.

An earlier report said when she went into custody for issuing threats:
SIST attorney Alan Eisenberg said Naomi was being starved and mistreated. He says she’s a practicing Orthodox Jew but was being refused Kosher foods.
It sounds like the group is of the radical Fundamentalist variety and isn't capable of making a distinction between the Mosaic Law and the Law of Christ(Old Law vs New Law).

Further background
Although Isaacson spent 3-1/2 years working as a law clerk for a Hennepin County district judge, her 16-page filing Tuesday lacked the characteristics of a legal document. It is unsigned and unsworn, and its cover page doesn't list the name of the case or case number.

The document says it is "From the Desk of C.E.O. Naomi Isaacson, J.D.," and the first 2-1/2 pages are typed in all capital letters. She accused Dreher of holding a "secret illegal hearing" and said the court "is an arm of the church to force the minority to be converted or face the consequences just like during the Dark and Middle Ages."

She called one trustee "Grand Inquisitor" and referred to the attorney representing the U.S. Trustee Program as a "Papal Drummer."
And some information on this cult on one of their members blogs.

Apparent Tornado near Madison, no serious injuries

One of Madison's hardest hit areas by a line of storms that included an apparent tornado late Monday and early Tuesday was on the Southwest Side just west of Vitense Golfland.

The Madison Fire Department said at least 23 homes were damaged and at least six had their roofs torn off in a two-block area of Yorkshire Road and Friar Lane just south of Schroeder Road. Scores of trees were destroyed; some covered vehicles parked in driveways and others blocked Friar Lane.

No serious injuries were reported, but some residents left their homes and took shelter in a Madison Metro bus until they could find alternative housing. Crews from the the Madison Streets Division and from the Madison Forestry Department also responded to help clear the debris and used chainsaws, grapples and front-end loaders.

Procession For Averting Tempest

Oshkosh church leaders worry practice change could force students to “choose between God and sports”

Leaders of a Catholic parish are asking the Oshkosh school district to reconsider a proposal to extend the hours of athletic practices on Wednesdays, saying it could interfere with religious education classes.

The letter from St. Jude The Apostle Parish was in response to a survey from the district’s athletic directors requesting feedback from area religious groups.

“All we are asking is that the school sports program respect the traditional Wednesday evening religious education program,” said Fr. Mathew Simonar, pastor of St. Jude. “As a Church we are trying to spiritually form the youth of our parish because they are not only the future of our faith but of our society as well. This becomes difficult when they (the youth) are forced to choose between God and sports.”

The district is proposing to change its high school athletic activities on Wednesday “early release” days to allow practice times to continue an extra 30 minutes and end at 6:30 p.m. instead of 6 p.m. The proposal also allows for make-up games to be played on Wednesdays during the month of May.

This seems to come up from time to time.  I think the couple of hours of religious ed kids get should be respected by coaches and schools.  If spring baseball presents a problem, switch to summer ball like many schools across the state.

Gov. Walker asks state superintendent to remove porn-watching teacher

MADISON, Wis. — Gov. Scott Walker on Tuesday urged state schools Superintendent Tony Evers to revoke Andrew Harris’ teachers’ license.

Harris is the Middleton-Cross Plains middle school teacher found to have viewed multiple pornographic images, videos and other inappropriate sexual content at the school.

“After hearing from concerned parents, I am asking you to act efficiently in your investigation into the actions of Mr. Harris and to initiate revocation proceedings,” Walker wrote in a letter to Evers.

The Middleton-Cross Plains School District fired Harris in 2010 after another teacher filed a complaint saying Harris showed her pornographic images at the school. The district launched an investigation that found Harris received hundreds of pornographic images, videos and inappropriate jokes on his school email account and viewed them at work.

Harris’ union filed a grievance asking that he be reinstated. The arbitrator, Karen Mawhinney, who donated $1,500 to two of Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett’s failed campaigns for governor in 2010 and the recall in 2012, agreed with the union. She ordered the district to reinstate Harris to a similar position and pay him nearly $200,000 in back pay. The district spent another $627,000 in legal fees trying unsuccessfully to have the decision overturned in the courts.

'Ice quakes' hit Wisconsin

Some strange booms have shaken residents in Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin.

The series of explosion-like sounds rattled residents from Waupun, Campbellsport and elsewhere Tuesday and sent Fond du Lac County sheriff's deputies out looking for a cause.

Geologists say the booms were likely a phenomenon commonly known as an ice quake.

They are the after-effects of the frost quakes - or cryoseism - which are more commonly found on glaciers in the polar regions.

It's caused by water that sinks into the soil and bedrock where it freezes and expands, causing an explosive popping sound that feels like a mild earthquake.

Most frost quakes occur after a heavy rainfall or snow fall when there is a large amount of moisture on the ground.

Video catches autistic therapist abusing 3 yr old Wisconsin child

When Stephanie Lowe and her husband didn’t see any improvements in their autistic toddler after he started therapy, they installed a hidden video camera to record just what was included in the sessions meant to help their son.

What the Waterford, Wisc., parents saw happening in real-time in their basement was shocking.

The man, identified as 27-year-old Stephen Jacobs, was recorded pulling the child by his arm, hitting him with pillows, head-butting him and throwing him the couch. All the while, 3-year-old Caeden Lowe just cried.

Former Middleton school librarian facing child porn charges
Man admitted to viewing child porn at home

A former librarian at a Middleton elementary school is facing six counts of possession of child pornography.

District officials said Todd Anderson, 62, of Middleton left his job at Sunset Ridge Elementary School before he was charged, and the district found no evidence he was looking at child pornography at school. He was arrested Monday.

According to a criminal complaint, Middleton police were called in August to investigate Anderson on allegations of sexual assault. During the course of the investigation, police searched Anderson’s computers and found child pornography, according to the complaint.

DailyMail: Wisconsin family discovers fully-stocked fallout shelter in their back yard 50 years later

For more than a decade after they moved into their house in Neenah, Wisconsin, the Zwick family knew they had a Cold War bunker in their backyard.

It was not until 2010 that anyone thought to open the heavy steel hatch, climb down the ladder and explore the 8-foot-by-10-foot chamber that the home's previous owner had built to protect his family from a nuclear attack.

Floating in five feet of water that had seemed into the bunker were sealed U.S. Army boxed packed with all of the supplies a family would need to survive two weeks underground.

Local Green Bay Group to protest NBC26 over SNL Sketch

Sometimes a good old-fashioned attention-getter is often what it takes to wake Christians up to the fact that time is short for sharing the hope we have in Jesus and the Gospel, as the world around us grows increasingly hostile to Christ’s message. Green Bay Wisconsin Christians are taking action in their outrage over how Saturday Night Live recently portrayed Jesus as a murderous, revenge-seeking psychopath in a skit called “Djesus Uncrossed,” as a movie trailer on February 16:

GB cemetery worker charged with stealing guitar from casket

One way to keep your Tele from theft
Randall Jourdan will spend eternity with his beloved Fender Telecaster after all.

It was returned to Jourdan's coffin over the weekend after the grounds superintendent of Allouez Catholic Cemetery and Chapel Mausoleum was accused of taking it.

Steven Conard, 39, was charged Monday in Brown County Circuit Court with theft from a corpse. If convicted, he faces 10 years in prison and a fine of $25,000. Brown County sheriff's deputies recovered the guitar from Conard's home in nearby Bellevue, Wis.

Family members say Jourdan's hands had been wrapped around the instrument's headstock as he lay in his coffin. Jourdan, of Oneida, Wis., died Sept. 19 at age 67.

Jourdan's live-in girlfriend, Shirley Schuyler, said Jourdan owned several guitars, many of which were displayed at his wake and funeral. But the Fender Telecaster, a custom-built reproduction of one played by a famous musician, was Jourdan's favorite.

"It was his one wish to have it with him," Schuyler said. "Whether he said it jokingly or not, he always said it, and that's what we tried to do."

Deputies learned of the theft Friday from the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay's director of facilities, Tammy Jo Basten, who reported the guitar missing from the casket.

The instrument had been in the casket when employees of Ryan Funeral Home transported the body Thursday to the suburban Green Bay, Wis., cemetery, the sheriff's department said. Funeral home employees verified its presence at the request of the dead man's family before putting the casket in the diocese's burial chamber.

A diocese employee became suspicious after overhearing Conard saying, "That's a Telly, a really expensive guitar. I have to have that guitar. It's too expensive to be in a crypt."

After his arrest, Conard allegedly said: "This isn't something I normally do. I just have a respect for fine musical instruments."

This has all the beginnings of a good haunting story.  Guitar starts moving around when no one touching it, man seeks help by listening to Hendrix record backward, guitar stars on fire and plays On Eagles Wings over and over until returned to casket....  you know, typical haunting.
