Kosloski: [Book Review] Church Militant Field Manual

Pope Benedict XVI, while having lunch with the College of Cardinals on May 22, 2012, reflected on the topic of the “battle against evil” and said “though the term ‘ecclesia militans’ [church militant] is ‘somewhat out of fashion,’ it is true, ‘it bears truth in itself.'” (Zenit, emphasis added)

He went on to say:

“We see how evil wishes to dominate the world and that it is necessary to enter into battle with evil,” he explained. “Evil is seen in many forms of violence,” the Pontiff reflected, but also “masked with goodness and precisely this way destroying the moral foundations of society.” (emphasis added)

Father Richard Heilman, a parish priest from the Diocese of Madison, Wisconsin, took these words of Pope Benedict as a call to action and sought to bring greater light to this invisible “battle against evil” and made it a focal point of his book Church Militant Field Manual: Special Forces Training for the Life in Christ. He saw society crumbling before his eyes and so wrote a book that is aimed not only at combating spiritual evil and rescuing the souls of family and friends, but more importantly, adapting practical spiritual practices for personal holiness.

Wisconsin groups featured in Catholic World Report: The Emerging Catholic Men’s Movement

Men of Christ Conference - Milwaukee
Flanked by candle-bearing acolytes, the priest held the monstrance aloft and processed through the aisles of the massive Milwaukee Theatre. More than 2,500 men were on their knees in adoration as the body, blood, soul, and divinity of Christ passed before them, bedecked in gold. The solemn Eucharistic procession was the culmination of the ninth annual Men of Christ conference: a day of prayer, speakers, reflection, and Mass. In the halls outside the theater, the line for confession was 200 deep much of the day, even with more than 75 priests hearing confessions. Men waited an hour or more to confess their sins and be forgiven. For some, it was their first confession in years, even decades.

On a Saturday when the highly ranked Wisconsin Badgers were playing tournament basketball on television, a small city of Catholic men instead* gathered in downtown Milwaukee to get closer to Christ. From ages 8 to 90, they filled the sprawling, ornate theater for more than eight hours of Catholic enrichment. The chorus of deep, resonant voices seemed to lift the roof during the Lord’s Prayer. Extended applause greeted Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome E. Listecki when he announced his support for concealed carry — then pulled out a Rosary as his weapon of choice. It seemed every man in the audience had one.

What’s going on here? The leaders of this emergent movement say the goal of events like this is nothing less than complete restoration of the Catholic man. Think “band of brothers” over pockets of loners; would be-martyrs instead of has-been quitters. Virtue and service over vice, sin, and addiction. Every Catholic Caspar Milquetoast is being called to emulate Don John of Austria, who with the Holy League saved Christendom from the Ottoman Turks. Yesterday’s average Joe is being remolded as priest, prophet, and king—a bold and self-sacrificing leader in the model of Jesus and St. Joseph. The call has gone out: real Catholic men wanted. Rosary-praying, faith-defending spiritual warriors. Education and training will be provided.

“Men need support and friendship of other Catholic men,” said Steve Ray, Catholic author, apologist, and creator of the Footprints of God documentary series. “We’re in a war, and men are starting to realize it. Life is getting tougher. We can no longer consider ourselves part of the flow of American culture.” Ray, who has spoken at the Men of Christ conference, said the timing is right for men to reclaim their Catholic faith and be prepared to defend it.

Recap of Madison Men's retreat

MADISON -- More than 60 men from the Diocese of Madison and surrounding areas recently gathered at the Bishop O’Connor Center (BOC) in Madison for “Fortes in Fide” (“Strong in Faith”) -- the annual diocesan Lenten Men’s Retreat.

The retreat is a joint effort between the diocesan Office of Evangelization and Catechesis and the Knights of Divine Mercy men’s apostolate.

The two-day retreat began with Mass and a pizza dinner for early arrivals.

Confession and Eucharistic Adoration

Fr. John Sasse, pastor of St. Clement Parish in Lancaster, gave an opening talk on the Sacrament of Reconciliation before that sacrament was made available to retreat attendees.

Father Sasse spoke on the importance of confessing venial, or less serious, sins, along with mortal sins.

“Venial sin blocks the action of grace in my soul,” he said. “If I’m confessing venial sins on a regular basis, I’m going to be much more open and responsive to actual graces that the Holy Spirit has given me along the way.”

Knights of Divine Mercy featured in Regina Mag

Fr Richard Heilman and his Knights of Divine Mercy help young Catholic men ‘put on the armor of God’ for themselves and their families. In this exclusive interview, he tells Regina Magazine  about how a strip club invading a small Midwestern town made it all happen.

What prompted you to begin the Knights of Divine Mercy?

In 2005, I was assigned as pastor of two parishes, one of which was St. Mary’s of Pine Bluff, a Catholic parish in a small, unincorporated town near Madison, Wisconsin. The little town of Pine Bluff has one church, two bars, and a handful of homes. Fields and idyllic countryside surround it. It’s the kind of town where people dream of raising their kids.
Shortly after my arrival, one of the bar owners decided to rent out his cozy establishment to a strip club owner. Neighbors were appalled, and
the little town was stunned. But there was not, it seemed, much that anyone could do.

That’s terrible! How did you get involved?

Discerning God’s will, I organized a mile-long Stations of the Cross through the town. I invited everyone to pray along this “miracle mile,” in an effort to reclaim this surrendered ground and to consecrate the soil back to Our Lord.
The inaugural prayer walk was on Palm Sunday 2005. Over two hundred people spilled into the little town of Pine Bluff to participate in the miracle mile. We prepared for the prayer walk by placing two-foot-high crosses in the lawns stretching all the way down the main road and back, the length of the miracle mile. Participants carried their prayer sheets and a white ribbon (a symbol of purity and anti-pornography).
The twelfth station found them at the entrance to the beautiful parish cemetery on a bluff with a life-size crucifix of our Lord and a one-hundred-year-old stone kneeler in front. The participants tied their white ribbons to this kneeler as a prayer form, much like lighting a vigil candle.
What happened after that day?

After that first prayer walk, a container holding prayer sheets and ribbons was placed at the first station on the walk. All were invited to come, pick up a prayer sheet and white ribbon, and pray at anytime of the day or night, as they wished. Over the next six months, prayer warriors walked the path, prayed the Stations, and sang hymns nearly round the clock. It was estimated that 600-700 ribbons were tied onto the cemetery kneeler over that period of time.

CatholicGentleman: Combat Rosary Giveaway!

“The holy Rosary is a powerful weapon. Use it with confidence and you’ll be amazed at the results.”
–St. Josemaria Escriva

The Church has named October the month of the Holy Rosary, and countless saints, popes, and holy men and women have encouraged the use of this powerful prayer. To celebrate the power of the rosary, I’m giving away three AWESOME Church Militant Combat Rosaries!

What is a Combat Rosary? The Church Militant Combat Rosary is based upon the original pull chain rosary that was commissioned and procured by, believe it or not, the U.S. government and issued by the military, upon request, to soldiers serving in World War I. Some of these rosaries were also seen in WWII. Veterans recognize them as “Service Rosaries.”

Made of strong metal pull chain, this rosary is meant to endure. Special locking jump rings add to this rosary’s toughness. This rosary’s endurance is meant to highlight the hopeful words of Psalm 136: “His love endures forever.” This Combat Rosary’s use of the Pardon Crucifix, Miraculous Medal and St. Benedict Medal makes it a powerful spiritual assault weapon against evil forces attempting to separate us from the love of God and His will for our lives.

In other words, these rosaries are quite possibly the manliest sacramentals every produced.

I like this guy.

A few other pics from KDM a couple Fridays ago.  I also recorded it, if anyone would find it helpful in starting their own chapter let me know.  Unfortunately it ran out of battery before benediction which is my favorite part when the choir makes me want to stand up on the pew and cheer.
