Matt Bowman: Madison should respect free speech for faith

Imagine if Republican Gov. Scott Walker spearheaded a gag rule that banned teacher unions from approaching someone to “leaflet” or “educate” them on the public sidewalk within a block of the Square.

And imagine Gov. Walker justified his support for the law based on his belief the Capitol must be “a more comfortable place for people to approach,” and that a gag rule “balances” speech by banning “harassment” (defined as leafleting and education) all the way back to a visitor’s parking space or bus stop.

Madison would be enraged. The ACLU would file lawsuits, and every liberal group in the state would defend freedom of speech. Madison would again issue statements praising anyone who is “peacefully assembled to exercise democracy and First Amendment rights.” Except they would be hypocrites.

Madison is poised to enact this sort of gag rule on the speech of pro-life people who leaflet and educate outside abortion and health facilities. The proposal breezed through two committees last week.

The vanguards of freedom in Madison are not silent on this gag rule. They support it.

Video of Wisconsin State Democrats voting on "Sonya's Law"

via Creative Minority
Watch this exchange in the Wisconsin legislature. Debate ended on an abortion (ultrasound) bill that that the Democrats oppose. They try to extend the debate to prevent voting on the bill. Watch the fun exchange that occurs after that.

While you at it, watch the full vid as Democrat members misrepresent the bill and the Republicans call them on it.  [I cant find this one, anyone else know where to find it?]

I wish I had more time to dig into this.

Athiests apply to erect a "solstice scene" near Wis Family Action nativity scene at capitol

A tiny figure of baby Jesus is surrounded by Mary, Joseph and the three wise men in a new nativity scene in the state Capitol rotunda.

The conservative group Wisconsin Family Action set up the manger scene on Sunday, and its president Julaine Appling said they plan to display it through the end of the month. But the move angered the Madison-based Freedom from Religion Foundation, which is now planning its own "slightly blasphemous" Capitol nativity display celebrating the winter solstice.

"It's distressing to me that we have a manger scene on top of all of the religion at the Capitol," Freedom from Religion co-president Annie Laurie Gaylord said. "Every day it's religion, religion, religion."

Gaylord said her group applied for a permit for its display on Friday, and hopes to set up the solstice scene as soon as possible. She didn't provide many details about it, but said "we will have a different type of wise people."

Signs, Signs, everywhere there's signs

The good guys are definitely winning the sign contest.

My favorite

Democrats, encouraging a culture of hatred since 1960.

Hahahaha, I thought you'd really like that last one.

Rape, Nazis, and Bambi?  Wow, you guys got it goin on.  It's just this reason that common people cannot support these hacks.  They cant present themselves or their arguments respectfully.  Anybody who disagrees is a Nazi.  Yeah yeah yeah.

ProLife Wis: Madison area businesses that financially support abortion

NARAL Pro-Choice Wisconsin has been furiously sending “reminder” emails about its upcoming Roe v. Wade celebration, to be held February 11 in Madison [see former blog post here].

NARAL’s website lists the names of Madison-area businesses who donated items for the event. Some of them aren’t a surprise, such as the Room of One’s Own bookstore and the Rainbow Bookstore, which market themselves to the gay/lesbian community.

Others are a reminder of where not to shop, whether you live in Madison or visit a couple times a year for Badger games. Put Copp’s grocery stores, Espresso Royale Cafe, Cardinal Bar, the Great Dane and the Glass Nickel Pizza Co. on THAT list.

Here is the full listing of businesses who financially supported NARAL, from NARAL’s website:A Room of One’s Own

NARAL also lists the names of individuals who contributed financially to sponsor the event. And again, some of the names aren’t a surprise, such as Nicole Safar, who is a lobbyist for Planned Parenthood of Wisconsin. Also included are politicians who support NARAL’s agenda, such as current Madison mayor Dave Cieslewicz and former Madison mayor Paul Soglin.

Madison Tech pushes students to embryonic stem cell research

Madison's community college has established an advanced degree that trains students the basics of working with human embryonic stem cells. It's thought to be the only program at a college of this kind that offering hands-on experience with human embryonic stem cells.

The post-baccalaureate Certificate in Stem Cell Techniques launched this fall through the Biotechnology Department at Madison College, which recently changed its name from Madison Area Technical College (or MATC). It currently offers one practical laboratory course in culturing and characterizing human embryonic stem cells, which were first derived in 1998 by University of Wisconsin-Madison cell biologist James A. Thomson.

“This really makes sense in Madison and this is a place where we can make a contribution,” Biotechnology Program Director Lisa Seidman said of the stem cell certificate. “We were ht perfect place to gear up for this.”

The college will this spring offer one course, and add a second lab course in human stem cells next fall, Seidman said. It's an expansion of the college's Biotechnology Program that began with associate degree courses in1987. Since then, the program has added other advanced programs, including one on Bioinformatics and another Biotechnology Intensive certificate.

Again, embryonic stem cell research has proven completely ineffective where as adult stem cell research has produced hundreds of uses.  It's bad science pushed by the corporate abortion lobby.

84 square miles surrounded by reality

Yours truly was also recently out dining in Madison (otherwise known as "84 square miles surrounded by reality") and the lawyer I was eating with started chatting with the waitress, and mentioned that I was still relatively new to the area. Conversation follows:

Waitress: Madison's a great place to make friends. It's very laid-back and liberal.
Me: I'm neither laid back nor liberal, I'm afraid.
Holy Whapping

Obama in Madison, who cares?

Liberal Madison students studying
Apparantly not UW Madison students.  FoxNews is reporting that president is begging for students to attend rally to fill seats.  I'm sure they are too busy "studying."
President Obama campaign found plenty of enthusiasm among students in the 2008 presidential race, but 2010 is another year -- and with seats to fill at a Tuesday rally at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, the Obama team took the step of sending an e-mail message to supporters in search of an audience.

The president is headed to Madison as part of a series of rallies in swing states leading up to the election. But where he drew a crowd of 17,000 at the University of Wisconsin in 2008 during the presidential race, crowds are expected to be significantly smaller this time around -- so much so that the president's campaign team, Organizing for America, is sending out RSVP requests for Tuesday's rally, featuring musician Ben Harper.
