In humiliating fashion, Marquette University defends hosting "Pride Prom"

Two of the most dodgy words in contemporary religious discourse are “fundamentalism” and “dialogue”. They don’t mean what they seem to mean; in fact, they are often used as a way to gain power.

To explain what I mean, consider that Marquette University, a Jesuit university, is holding a “Pride Prom” this weekend. When some outside the university angrily questioned what a Catholic university is doing sponsoring an LGBT dance, a university spokesman responded:

Can you imagine having to embrace this soft nihilism and come up with statements like this?   And then they feel so strongly about it, they refuse requests for interviews on the topic. LOL! 

There's a whole lot of room for a faithful Catholic university in the upper midwest.  If you build it, they will come. 

Marquette University sponsors Gay "Pride Prom 2018"

MILWAUKEE (ChurchMilitant.com) - A Catholic university in Wisconsin has divulged it will sponsor a gay dance in the spring.

Earlier this month, Marquette University announced it will host "Pride Prom 2018" next April.

According to the Jesuit school's LGBTQ+ Resource Center, the event will take place inside the Alumni Memorial Union (AMU). The AMU houses the Chapel of the Holy Family, where Our Lord in the Holy Eucharist is present.

Marquette's announcement has scandalized orthodox Catholics, who are responding with a petition for the event to be canceled. The petition effort is led by TFP Student Action, a national network of Catholic university students and parents, fighting to promote traditional moral values on college campuses.

I get having the Vagina Monologues as an act of feminism, controversy, and empowerment. And I get banning them because they’re transphobic. But simultaneously advertising for them and denying their underlying premise makes no sense. It captures well the confusion of Catholics who have sought hard to accommodate the world only to find the world continue down its path, leaving their heads swimming.

I literally laughed out loud to the point of tears when I saw this.  Hilarious is the absurd state the Left finds herself in.

Stunning Success: Ben Shapiro at Marquette

It was an event the campus left hated: Ben Shapiro, an actual conservative speaker at Marquette.

Not only did a staffer from the Center for Gender and Sexuality Studies attempt to sabotage the event by advising leftists to get tickets and not show up (depriving a student who wanted to see the speech of admittance), but the campus feminist group Empowerment circulated a deranged letter accusing Shapiro of racism, xenophobia and hateful rhetoric.

But in fact, the event went off without a hitch.

Marquette University Staff Caught Blocking Access to Ben Shapiro Lecture

Facebook posts obtained by Young America’s Foundation show at least one member of Marquette University’s staff engaging in attempts to undermine an upcoming Ben Shapiro lecture organized by the school’s Young Americans for Freedom (YAF) chapter.

In a comment on a Facebook thread, Chrissy Nelson, listed online as a program assistant for Marquette’s Center for Gender and Sexuality Studies, alleges that a director of diversity on campus suggested to her in a phone conversation that people should reserve seats to the lecture through Eventbrite posing as students in order “to take a seat away from someone who would actually go.” Nelson wrote that she would be “promoting” this suggestion, actively impeding Marquette students’ ability to hear from a respected conservative voice.

In a subsequent comment Nelson continued to boast that she “will encourage students to protest” Shapiro’s lecture the day after it occurs.

Group protests ‘transgender ideology' on campus: Marquette University slams as ‘transphobia’

Administrators at Marquette University have rebuked an on-campus demonstration held on Thursday opposing the Catholic university's embrace of gender ideology.

The protesters, from the American TFP’s Student Action, who were on a tour of Wisconsin, held a 14-foot banner with the quote "God made them male and female” from Genesis 5:2. The scripture quote was followed by, “Stop the ravages of transgender ideology."

Marquette introduced gender-neutral restrooms to accommodate "transgender" students last year. Signage was replaced, and instead of bathrooms being labeled “Men” and “Women,” they became “Bathroom A” or “B,” and “Bathroom 1” or “2.”

The TFP Student Action demonstration included flyers with information on how transgenderism is dangerous to the family, triggering some hostility and at least one faculty member who attempted to block their message.

A counter-protest by students was joined by the university provost, who said the TFP Student Action demonstration consisted of “messages of discrimination” that do not reflect “who” Marquette is.

Marquette Theology Professor Critiques University’s Gender Regime

From First Things, Marquette Theology Professor Mickey L. Mattox on the “gender regime” of this supposedly Catholic university:

Working in my Marquette office one afternoon in the spring of 2010, I heard unusual sounds coming from the normally quiet lawns outside my window. I was surprised to see a modest assembly of students and professors preparing to march in protest. Against what? Minutes later, an email arrived informing me that the university’s then-president, Robert Wild, S.J., had voided a contract extended to Jodi O’Brien to join us as Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. Though the contract had already been signed, Fr. Wild—perhaps under external pressure—decided that O’Brien, a partnered lesbian whose research included queer studies, was not an appropriate choice to represent our mission and identity.

Although an ordinary person with a passing knowledge of the moral teachings of the Catholic Church would think such a decision obvious, the department chairs in the college soon gathered and voted almost unanimously to censure Wild’s decision. The press, meanwhile, demanded an explanation. On the ­defensive, the university allegedly paid a considerable sum in order to break the contract. Officials were soon exercising themselves to demonstrate their concern for equitable treatment of gays and lesbians. The university would initiate projects, courses, conferences, and the like to explore issues of sex and gender! The clear implication was that change would come, though slowly. Marquette would get with the sexual-liberation program so that something like the O’Brien affair would never happen again.

News: Eight people attend Marquette LGBT Mass

Campus Ministry hosted one of its monthly Masses for the LGBT community and its allies at the St. Joan of Arc Chapel on Nov. 20.

Theology professor the Rev. Bryan Massingale led Mass with the eight students and community members who attended.

“Many of the LGBTQ community members have heard stories that they are not welcome in the church,” Massingale said. “It is important to have a Mass where they feel welcome and that God does love them and no one is excluded.”

But don't worry, LGBTQRSTUVs, there are other opportunities for pride!

Other Marquette worship opportunities include Islamic prayer, Jewish services, Lutheran worship and Eastern Orthodox Vespers.

You know, because Islam is peace because tolerance.

Come on, if your going to cover a student event for EIGHT people, at least let us know what the music selection was.

I would think if they can't get attendance for these, they will start hijacking existing Mass times to force it down everyone's throats.

Not reported if a Gay Marriage was performed; Massingale is more than willing.

Marquette Gender Dept commandeers Respect for Life Month

Respect for Life LGBTQ Month at Marquette

Marquette, Georgetown and other Catholic colleges and universities have been exposed for replacing pro-life awareness activities with LGBTQ activities over the course of October, “Respect for Life Month.”

Indeed, a quick search of Marquette’s website shows that LGBTQ activities have abounded over the month of October while Pro-Life activities are, evidently, non-existent. (Please let us know if you can find any. Note that on this webpage, “Respect Life Month” themes include LGBTQ persons, the death penalty and immigration and poverty. But where are the activities to raise awareness of the murder of the unborn and the sanctity of every human life from conception to natural death?).

One question: Why? Please feel free to—respectfully— put this question to those charge with advancing Marquette’s mission and ministry and with Marquette leadership.

John McAdams may sue Marquette after this week’s Faculty Hearing Committee meetings

There will be Faculty Hearing Committee meetings from Monday to Thursday this week to determine if associate political science professor John McAdams will be allowed to continue working at Marquette after his role in a widely publicized controversy between a student and teaching assistant.

“If the committee comes down against me, Marquette will surely fire me and then, of course, a lawsuit will follow,” McAdams told Wisconsin Watchdog on the Jay Weber Show, on News/Talk 1130 WISN.

Here is a timeline of events leading to this week’s faculty hearing committee meetings: 

Marquette starts removing McAdams – Feb. 4, 2015

McAdams announced on his blog that Marquette started the process to revoke his tenure and dismiss him from faculty.

McAdams had the option to object to the university’s decision, which he did. That resulted in this week’s Faculty Hearing Committee Meetings.

“In real universities, administrators understand, or more likely grudgingly accept, that faculty will say controversial things, will criticize them and each other, and that people will complain about it,” McAdams said on his blog. “That sort of university is becoming rarer and rarer. Based on Holz’ actions, Marquette is certainly not such a place.”

Marquette University graduate Aaron Ledesma credits his mother, Patty McNeil, and Pope Francis with bringing him back to the Catholic Church. 60+ Marquette faculty sign petition to protest removal of mural of terrorist Assata Shakur

We now have the text of the petition signed by over 60 Marquette faculty and staff, protesting the removal of a mural of cop killer and terrorist Assata Shakur from a wall in the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center.

Jaw dropping. Read the whole thing there. Prof. McAdams nails it in his conclusion.

That sixty-plus people signed this shows how corrupt Marquette has become. It’s true that this is only a small proportion of all Marquette faculty and staff. But this mentality permeates certain departments at Marquette, including two departments integral to a liberal arts education: English and Philosophy. And it’s dominant among the activists who are constantly pushing Marquette to be less and less a Catholic university, or more a citadel of secular political correctness.

I don't even know what the answer could be for Marquette.  Is there any way to ever recover these two critical departments from this freak show?

Marquette apparently fires Director of "Gender and Sexuality Resource Center" over terrorist mural

Susannah Bartlow, who was just yesterday apparently fired by Marquette, was the Director of the Gender and Sexuality Resource Center, where a huge mural painted on the wall honored the cop killer and domestic terrorist Assata Shakur.

Until now, we have entertained the idea that this was merely an act of gross negligence on the part of Bartlow and the staff at the GSRC. Did they not know who Shakur is? Was it just “failure to Google?”

But an assiduous web surfer brings us this information: Bartlow signed a petition at change.org demanding that Barack Obama remove Shakur from the “Most Wanted Terrorists” list.

So Bartlow knew perfectly well who Shakur is. And she chose to present Shakur as a sage and a role model for Marquette students.

Campus Mural of Cop Killer: Marquette Responds

It has been a massive public relations fiasco, and Marquette had to engage in damage control.

The University just supplied the following statement to Fox News. This, presumably, is what they will tell all media outlets:

Marquette University statement:
Our university's senior leadership just became aware of a mural that was created and displayed in a remote area of campus. This is extremely disappointing as the mural does not reflect the Guiding Values of Marquette University. It is being removed immediately. We are reviewing the circumstances surrounding the mural and will take appropriate action.

Since they could hardly defend the mural, this statement is not surprising.
