Bishop Richard Sklba 'Lutherans and Catholics in Dialogue' January 6th in Milwauee

Our monthly First Friday Mass and Meeting is January 6th.

We are very pleased to have Bishop Richard J. Sklba, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee, as our January speaker. Among his many duties and interests, Bishop Sklba served as the Catholic Co-Chair for the national Lutheran/Catholic Dialogue for over 12 years, and as Chair of the USCCB's Committee for Ecumenical and Interreligious Affairs for three years. A 2011 book, The Hope of Eternal Life (Lutherans and Catholics in Dialogue), is the fruit of a study project Bishop Sklba facilitated with many participants. October of 2017 marks the 500th anniversary of Luther's 95 Theses. Altogether, it is quite timely to have Bishop Sklba lead a discussion about Lutheran / Catholic Relations: the path and journey toward reconciliation.

Mass will be celebrated at 7:30 A.M. in the Chapel of St. Edmund Campion, located on the 4th floor of Eckstein Hall (Marquette University Law School). Mass will be followed by our meeting and discussion from 8:00-9:00 A.M., which includes a continental breakfast (suggested donation $4.00). Parking is available in the Eckstein Hall underground parking structure. (Enter the lot, pull a ticket, and find an open parking space. Once parked, take the elevator to main floor, which opens to the foyer, and go to the welcome desk to get your parking ticket validated.)

University of Minnesota accused of using fetal tissue illegally

The Thomas More Society charged the University of Minnesota Oct. 19 for illegal use of aborted fetuses in its research practices.

“The petition basically says to the Hennepin County District Court, ‘By what authority does the University of Minnesota violate Minnesota’s law prohibiting transplantation research on the fetal remains of aborted fetuses,” said attorney Erick Kaardal of Minneapolis-based Mohrman, Kaardal & Erickson, P.A., serving as special counsel for the Thomas More Society.

The Chicago-based nonprofit law firm that focuses on pro-life cases filed a petition in the Fourth District Court of Hennepin County. Kaardal said that the firm acted on behalf of St. Paul-based Pro-Life Action Ministries and Minnesota graduate student Bridget Busacker because the current law in Minnesota doesn’t allow for research on aborted fetuses, according to statute 145.1621.

It's also important to remember in these cases that the research requires Freshly Killed Babies as the University of Wisconsin admitted recently.
University officials, lawmakers and abortion activists have argued over the legality of fetal tissue research in Minnesota since last summer, when a U spokesman denied the existence of the controversial research on campus, then admitted that it was taking place.

Walworth fair officials back down, will let pro-life display return

It’s amazing how persuasive attorney intervention can be.

After telling the Catholic group Peter’s Net it was barred from returning to the Walworth County Fair in Wisconsin this year, the fair board changed its mind upon hearing from the Thomas More Society, a pro-life legal group, and Wisconsin attorney Jerome Buting.

At issue was the pro-life component of Peter’s Net’s display.

While fair officials made other excuses, the issue boiled down to viewpoint discrimination, according to the Thomas More Society.

Milwaukee's Pro-life advocate Dan Miller says ‘farewell to Farwell’

Dan Miller
An injunction for harassment was recently granted against a local pro-life advocate and leader of 40 Days for Life, a campaign working to end abortion through prayer, fasting and peaceful vigil, that could keep him from volunteering near Affiliated Medical Services on Farwell Avenue until Dec. 17, 2017.

But Dan Miller, with the help of the Chicago-based Thomas More Society, a national public interest law firm, and local lead counsel from a Brookfield-based law firm, will appeal the injunction that stems from a Temporary Restraining Order Milwaukee Police served Miller June 19, 2012, at the request of Alan Keltner.

Miller said Keltner, a volunteer for Affiliated Medical Services, is “very aggressive, more than most,”[LOL! He's going to charge!] while Miller and volunteers are on the sidewalk counseling women heading into the abortion clinic. The injunction hearing came after an event that happened involving 40 Days for Life volunteers and Keltner in October.

“He approached one of our vigiler’s three daughters and began to occupy their personal space uncomfortably close and took it upon himself to give them a completely inappropriate sex education class … ” Miller said, explaining he knew who Keltner was and wanted to make others who brought children to pray with them aware of his actions.

Stanek: IL Supreme Court upholds 18-yr-old parental notification law

Today, in a unanimous ruling, the Illinois Supreme Court issued a decision to uphold a parental notification law enacted way back in 1995.

This is FABULOUS news, since Illinois has become known as the abortion dumping ground of the Midwest – the only state without any parental involvement law in force, while all surrounding states have such measures.

Thomas More Society, the pro-life legal team based in Illinois that has been pushing enforcement of this law, has posted a synopsis of this incredibly drawn out court battle.

Catholic Adoption Agencies in Illinois Fight Back

The Catholic Dioceses of Springfield, Peoria, and Joliet, Illinois have filed a lawsuit against the State of Illinois for trying to force them out of the adoption business because of their religious beliefs that marriage is between a man and a woman.

The Dioceses are represented by Chicago’s Thomas More Society, headed by veteran pro-life and religious liberties attorney Thomas Brejcha.

The Thomas More Society has made a powerful argument that the state officials in Illinois are overreaching to punish Catholic agencies because of their religious beliefs, in violation of state laws that actually protect Christian agencies from government discrimination.
