Cardinal Cupich remains silent on ‘LGBT Catholics’ event in his own diocese

Next week in the Archdiocese of Chicago, the Catholic bishop of Lexington, Kentucky will speak to a symposium organized by a dissident group condemned by the Vatican and U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops. Chicago's Cardinal Blase Cupich hasn't commented on the event taking place within his archdiocese, nor acted to prevent his fellow bishop from speaking there.

Bishop John Stowe of the Diocese of Lexington is scheduled to speak at New Ways Ministry's 2017 conference, titled "Justice and Mercy Shall Kiss: LGBT Catholics in the Age of Pope Francis." He's defended his decision to do so, saying "Pope Francis has signaled that we need to take another look at those things."

Defending his scheduled talk for the gay advocacy group, Stowe said Church teaching on homosexuality "was not Jesus’ approach." Catholic doctrine on the issue isn't "immune from ever changing," he said.

Stowe will offer the conference's opening prayer on Friday, April 28 and morning prayer on Saturday, April 29. The conference includes sessions such as "Lesbian Nuns: Gift to the Church," "Gay Men in Priesthood and Religious Life," and "Transgender & Intersex Identities and the Family."

Play Depicting ‘Furtive Lesbian Romance’ Performed at St. Norbert's College

At least two Catholic colleges are planning productions this academic year of the play “Stop Kiss,” which has been described as a tale of “furtive lesbian romance” that “chronicles the sexual awakening of two appealing young women as they tiptoe around mutual desire.”

St. Norbert College in De Pere, Wis., is sponsoring a production of the play in November. “After Callie meets Sara, the two unexpectedly fall in love,” according to the event description. “Their first kiss provokes a violent attack that transforms their lives in a way they could never anticipate. Mature audiences only; adult language and situations.”

The College of Saint Benedict and St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minn., is planning to perform the play in the spring. The advertisement for the production includes a disclaimer: “Adult content. Recommended for ages 14+.”

Neither college returned multiple requests for comments by the time of publication.

Father Dan Felton, vicar general and moderator of the curia for the Diocese of Green Bay, told the Newman Society that when the play at St. Norbert College came to the attention of the diocese he met immediately with senior administration to address the performance of the play. No further information was provided. The play is currently still scheduled to be performed.

Cdl. Burke in Ireland: “aggressive homosexual agenda” causes “the profound unhappiness and even despair of those affected by it”

Cardinal Raymond Burke has urged Pope Francis to take the issues of Communion for the divorced and remarried, cohabitation and same-sex marriage “off the table” for next year’s Synod of Bishops.

Addressing more than 300 delegates at a family and marriage conference, organised by Catholic Voice, in Limerick on November 15, the American cardinal said these issues had distracted the work of the synod in its first session in October.

Warning that Satan was sowing confusion and error about matrimony, the cardinal patron of the Knights of Malta said, “Even within the church there are those who would obscure the truth of the indissolubility of marriage in the name of mercy.”

The 66-year-old former archbishop of St Louis instead recommended that next year’s synod devote itself to promoting the church’s teaching on marriage.

Cardinal Burke also ruled out any easing of the restriction on Communion for those divorced and remarried without an annulment of their original marriage.

“I fail to be able to comprehend how — if marriage is indissoluble and someone is living in a state contradicting this indissolubility of marriage — the person can be admitted to holy Communion,” he said.

Marquette Philosophy Instructor: “Gay Rights” Can’t Be Discussed in Class Since Any Disagreement Would Offend Gay Students

A student we know was in a philosophy class (“Theory of Ethics”), and the instructor (one Cheryl Abbate) was attempting to apply a philosophical text to modern political controversies. So far so good.

She listed some issues on the board, and came to “gay rights.” She then airily said that “everybody agrees on this, and there is no need to discuss it.”

The student, a conservative who disagrees with some of the gay lobby’s notions of “gay rights” (such as gay marriage) approached her after class and told her he thought the issue deserved to be discussed. Indeed, he told Abbate that if she dismisses an entire argument because of her personal views, that sets a terrible precedent for the class.

The student argued against gay marriage and gay adoption, and for a while, Abbate made some plausible arguments to the student — pointing out that single people can adopt a child, so why not a gay couple? She even asked the student for research showing that children of gay parents do worse than children of straight, married parents. The student said he would provide it.

So far, this is the sort of argument that ought to happen in academia.  [Exactly!]

Yes, continue to read this train wreck.  Catholic colleges like Marquette claim they can teach whatever they want in the name of "academic freedom."  Ironically, it turns out the actual intention of "academic freedom" is to simply redefine the dogmas and decree them without consideration.  Don't think.  All your brains are belong to us.

Another inclusivity effort initiated this year, the Action Group on Campus Conversations on Gender and Sexuality, has met throughout the spring semester to discuss how to improve dialogue on campus related to issues of gender and sexuality and our Catholic, Jesuit mission. That group is organizing campus forums this fall for faculty, staff and students to share their thoughts, and I urge all of you to participate in these meaningful discussions.

Gay and lesbian students will be asked to report instances where anybody let on that they think that homosexuality is not a normal condition, or that homosexual acts are sinful or immoral. 

In other words, any instances where some student might let slip that they accept Catholic teaching on homosexuality. That can’t be allowed at a modern Catholic university.

Janesville superintendent apologizes for same-sex marriage video showing

The Janesville School District superintendent apologized this week after high school students were shown a video in which children react to same-sex marriage proposals, saying the video was biased in favor of gay marriage.

Superintendent Karen Schulte said Tuesday the district needs to show all sides when discussing controversial issues and that the 16-minute video – shown April 11 as part of a national anti-bullying day – failed to provide sufficient balance.

The video “certainly didn’t show support for the other side,” she told The Janesville Gazette.

Craig High School’s Gay-Straight Alliance showed “Kids React to Gay Marriage,” in which children react to the proposals and share their thoughts on related issues such as gay-marriage bans.

Relevant Radio's Fr. Rocky on the hot seat after pro-marriage talk at Catholic high school

I missed this over the weekend:

The Rev. Francis “Rocky” Hoffman, a priest of Opus Dei, an orthodox division of the Roman Catholic Church, and executive director and radio host of Relevant Radio, a Catholic radio network that broadcasts on 33 stations in 13 states and online, had spoken to a school-wide assembly at The Prout School, where Anna is a junior. The speech was being taped to be broadcast on Relevant Radio at a later date.

“She was most upset about the divisive and offensive language regarding divorce, homosexuality and even adoption,” Kathleen Schlenz said. “None of the parents or faculty knew it was being taped to be aired. They were essentially held hostage and told to clap after this man’s responses to questions, even when they didn’t agree with them.”

Father Hoffman was on retreat and unavailable for comment before the Independent went to press Wednesday.

On April 10, parents received a letter of apology from Principal David Carradini since Friday. In the new letter, Carradini announced he would not resign.

“People in our community are calling for my resignation, seeing in this event the culmination of frustration with my leadership,” Carradini wrote in the April 10 letter. ”I have taken this call very seriously, deliberating with myself for days and seeking counsel from others. I sincerely believe that my resignation as Principal is not in the best interests of The Prout School. I have this discussed this option with diocesan officials and they, too, believe that I should continue in my position as the leader of our School.”

Good for Fr. Rocky!  The fact the principal thought about resigning goes to show the school may not be salvageable.  I hope Wisconsin diocesan schools can invite him to give the same talk.

Judge refuses to block WI marriage amendment, proposes speedy trial

Citing rulings in a spate of similar lawsuits across the country, U.S. District Judge Barbara Crabb on Tuesday declined to issue a preliminary injunction halting enforcement of Wisconsin’s ban on same-sex marriage.

But Crabb signaled that she plans to move quickly to decide the case — even if the American Civil Liberties Union of Wisconsin declines her advice to withdraw its motion for a preliminary injunction.

Crabb said the plaintiffs should consider pursuing a “swift, final determination” in U.S. District Court in Madison “rather than litigating the case in multiple stages with no clear benefits to either side.”
